if a 80K starting car is now 40k no value holding potential.

I am not talking about it holding its value. There is a low demand for them obviously. But I am saying the car itself is the best you can find for 40k. I would take a phateon over a 745i any day of the week.

Edit: And a response to kevykev the cars are really rare. I have seen maybe 2 or 3 on the road without dealer tags.
