It's all a matter of opinion.

I think the best brands are:
    Head Units: Alpine
    Speakers: Boston Acoustics
    Subs: JL Audio
    Amps: JL Audio

I wouldnt buy all of that because it seems too played out. I know that sounds dumb but whatever. I buy as much MB Quart as I can because it is quality and german so it goes with my car.

I am a big fan of the eclipse by fujitsu ten products. They have some of the best headunits with excellent theft features, great component sets, matched amps, and the alumina series subs can not be beaten for crispness.

    Head Unit: Eclipse, Alpine
Speakers: Diamond Audio, Elemental Design, Focals
    Subs: Elemental Design, JL
    Amp: Elemental Design, MBQ, JBL.

Just to name a few average... then there are those higher ends. In all honesty, it varries.

    Only what I have owned.
Headunits-Kenwood very good and durable. Panasonic had lots of goodies and loved the blue color. Excellent value for money.
Speakers-Infinity I love although mid-bass is not that great, but sound quality I loved. Blaupunkt P-series(I believe) separates were pretty decent for component speakers. I had a problem with one of the woofers though. It was like it would heat up and then the sound would fade away at medium loud levels. I replaced with a Polk woofer and was great
Amps-Precision Power Incorporated-PPI(Art Series. old school) This amp was a powerhouse. I had the A300 and A204 I believe. Kenwood amps are good quality all around. USAcoustics I am trying again after I bought a bad one on ebay. But when it worked it was awesome, kinda like the PPI amp.
Subs-JL Audio was excellent all around. MTX Road Thunder series. I had these subs for about 5-6 years before I ever used the subs. Good sound from a entry level sub. Bazooka 10 tube was good. Better than what reviews said about the tube. It did suffer from bass below say 50hz or so but for just "listening" I would buy another. Took up no space also.
