Its a really weak system on those older cars, basically the suspension just flexes to add rear steering; personally I'd rather have everything locked down tight on the suspension. Its really easy to ditch so go ahead and get the car if thats the breaking point on the purchase.

I know some Subies have a passive rear steering design, but this isn't the case with Super HICAS. There is a separate steering rack, which uses vehicle speed and steering input (via the abs and the sensor on the steering wheel, respectively) to ACTIVELY steer the rear wheels a few degrees. Hence the "A" in HICAS (HIgh Capacity Active Steering).

I happen to own a HICAS car. And I've driven a lot of non-HICAS S13s. The bottom line is, if you want to drift, you might as well find a non-HICAS car. The HICAS gear is pretty heavy, and even though you can buy a one-piece "eliminator," there is still a lot of crap you'd need to remove to be completely HICAS-free. Otherwise you're just carrying around a bunch of dead weight.

That being said....HICAS cars all have ABS and a VLSD. The latter two are definitely worth it IMO. Even before I swapped in my SR, I could break the rear end loose all day long, thanks to the VLSD. ABS may not be ideal for a track car, but if you intend to daily drive this car, it's definitely something you should have.
