first bike
looking to buy my first bike im not a big guy 5'8 130 what would a good first bike for me i was thinking a 600...would like to find a good used one bc i know ill lay it down atleast once where is good place to start looking as well...just my local dealer???thanks for the help

I second. Start with good gear and the MSF course. Get a cheap used bike to start with. GS500, SV650, EX500, FZR600, etc. Keep the power low for a first bike.
y does every1 say 2 start with a small bike? i recommend u get sumthing u can grow with!!! im a big guy but my 1st bike was a hayabusa and i never dropped it or anything {KNOCK ON WOOD} but i would recommend atleast a 750, they are easy 2 ride and when u get more skill a 750 is enuff for almost any1, unless u want a landspeed record...........

Smaller bikes are lighter and easier to learn with. You can concentrate on riding more.
Why do MotoGP races start in GP125, then go to GP250, then move up? If it doesn't matter, why even have a GP125 class at all?.... Maybe they know more that we do?....

I know a guy who started on a Busa as well. He thought he could ride pretty well until he joined his first group ride through the mtns. It was a miracle he made it through. He ran off the road making simple turns onto side streets and in curves. He later had a few minor get offs that could of possibly happened on a lighter bike, but me personally I would rather rash and trash up a smaller, uglier and much cheaper bike than an expensive piece of art. Yea I know insurance, but I like to keep my rates on the cheap side and and I rather not waste hard earned money on preventable repairs.
On another note: Unlike the more expensive powerful bikes, the cheaper ones don't loose their value. So once prepared for more cc's it's easy to sell and highly possible you'll get what you paid for it. Even after it is crashed. Now crash a larger cc bike and see what you can sell it for......
I have a EX250 sitting in my garage, when I do take it out, its so much easier to ride than my Gsx-r600.

I took the MSF course at the Honda Training Center off 400. It was def a good idea if you are just starting out.

im a dumbass? what was your first bike? and how long was it b4 u wanted 2 upgrade? every1 i kno that buys a 600 ends up selling them for a 750 or bigger within 6-8months!!! thats all im saying, save urself the time and money u might lose selling the 600, and im not saying for every1 to run out and buy a busa, 1000 or zx14!!! a 750 is easy enuff 2 learn on but also enuff to scare the shit out of u wen u get sum more skillz! regaurdless of what kind of bike you start with if you ride SCARED and respect the bike you should be okWhat a dumbass
well that may be you but i would never recommend anyone getting that big of a bike on there first bike i have seen two of my friends in texas both get busa one as his first and the other guy it was his 3rd bike and one was killed in 3 weeks and the other was killed in 4 1/2 months

You NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER ride scared ..If your scared , you will crash ..You always need to know that at some point you will go down ,we all do ..I have crashed a few times just like anyone lese i know that rides hard ,does track days , stunts , and go to the mountains ...
You are right about one thing though ..RESPECT !!! Dont be scared of the bike ,yet respect it ..Honestly a bike is only as fast as your wrist turns the throttle but all the low end tourqe of a litre bike will bite you in the ass in 2 seconds flat ..
If you come off a dirtbike and been riding dirt for years then not such a big deal to hop on a modern Sportbike but no bigger than 600 ..They are less forgiving when you do (NOT IF BUT WHEN ) make a mistake

by the way my very first street bike was an old ass Honda Hurricane 600 ..Whihc is about the same power of a newer 500 ..PLENTY of power for a newb...My second was a zx7 my 3rd was a zx9 ,then back to a cbr600, then a couple years later back on a zx9...After the zx9 i bought a 2005 gsxr 600 ..LOVED IT at first i was mad about the power loss but after a few weeks i learned i could ride the bike so much better without that waste of power ...
After the 600 i went to a 2005 gsxr 1000..Had it 2 weeks and realized it was a waste of money and back down to a 2005 750 ...Now i am on a 2007 750 with an ass load of mods...
Been riding since i was 7 or 8 in the dirt and street since i was 16-17 and i am now 28

once again i am not recomending anything bigger then a 750, and if its his first bike he will probaly be looking used bikes. i kno the newer 750s are badass but they can be ridden with the commen sense for some1 to ride within their limits, and yet still be able to grow with the bike! and i didnt mean scared as in scared 2 ride but in the sense that every car on the road is out to hit you

Lol. You're dumb. A new rider has no business on any race-replica sport bike. They are *considerably* more difficult to ride proficiently. If you don't already realize that, then its because you don't know how to ride. Period.

If the OP wants to end up a straight-line speed junkie like stay_up (who constantly makes ignorant comments regarding motorcycles), then it doesn't matter what he starts on...
...but if the OP wants to take the fastest & safest path to getting any skills, then he will start on 500cc or smaller.
My recommendation to the OP: Do your own research. Just like anything else, people will give you varying bits of advice (some of it good, some of it bad).
There are lots of people out there who will give you a bunch of shitty advice because they dont' know any better. Such is life. Make an informed decision, even if its the wrong one.
