I've been in the import scene a little while, now. I've built some motors, but mostly all I have gotten to play with is FF setups. I've done a little bit of autocross, and countless mountain passes. I'm ready for something new. Drifting seems to be the latest fad. I've been to a few events, and it looks fun. Reminds me of when I was 16 with a dodge ram and lit up a tire coming out of a turn getting the back end a little bit loose.

Well, I think an FR setup, whether I go drifting or not, will be the next vehicle I wanna build. Insurance prevents me from getting a high-powered car, or a new car. So...I'm looking at the line of Nissans because I like their body style (180s, 240s, 240z, 280z/300Z (the older models)) and I've found some affordable ones. So I wanna learn about what can be done to what years...

For example, my 91 honda civic...83-87 you can't really do many swaps to, but 88-91 you can do just about any honda made...

Basically, I wanna know what gens can have what done to them, I wanna know what front ends can be put on what, I wanna know what's optimal for drifting (in the event I decide to get into it) etc.

You can basically swap any SR or RB motors into any 240 model. I believe the 300zxs come with a V series motor in them and are a bitch to work on, so I'd stay away from them. I recently saw a really bad ass S12, might wanna go with that and be a little different.

When I was doing research on the 240's, though, (89+) I thought I read where 89 and 90 couldn't have a certain engine, but 91+ could? Or was that an errror on their part?.

Also, whats' the difference between SR and RB motors? Keep in mind I'm new to Nissan, LoL. I've built carb'd V8's, and honda/acura's, and one or two toyota's, LoL.

240's are easy to swap. RB's are somewhat heavy. the SR20 is my personal favorite. yeah i drive a Nissan but im still Honda at heart. my 1st car was a 98 Integra and im still in love with her. Hondas are by far the easiest cars to swap/work on.. hell if u want a good FR car just get an older S2K

SR20det are the motors that came in the Silvia equivalent to our 240sx in japan. They are a DOHC 2.0 liter turbocharged engine. Came with a T25 turbo and are fairly quick in stock form.

The RB motors come in several different variations ranging from RB20det to RB26dett, obviously the latter being the motor from the covetted GTR34 skylines.

As far as which motors can go where, according to my knowledge with the know how to do it, you can stick any of them in any car. The SRs came in 3 different turbo varieties I think, redtop, from the sil eightys and S13 silvias, the blacktop in the S14 silvias, and the other blacktop in the S15 silvias. As far as I know, you shouldn't have a problem putting the motor in your USDM 240 as long as you have the JDM ECU for your year equivalent car. Someone else may chime in and say I'm retarded, but this is what I know. As far as the RB swaps, don't really know what all is involved their, never done one, but a lot of people do. I know the rb26dett is supposed to be matted to a AWD setup so if you wanted to put it into a 240, you'd need a RWD tranny from one of the other RB series motors from an R32 or 33.

all in all, being a first timer, I'd try to get one already swapped and learn from it. It's basically all done so you can take it appart and back together and learn as you go. It would be harder to build from the ground up being a first timer to this. I also agree with the other guy, RBs are heavy and unless you're going for the RB26dett, won't really get you a whole lot more than a built SR20det would.

Well, if I keep my civic, I dont' mind doing a swap myself because I'll have the time for it to sit. Reading up on the RB motor, I would probably go with the SR. How much can one be picked up for?

I love my civic, but now I'm considering, LoL, but if I do move from Honda to Nissan, I've got SO much shit to sell off, LoL

I wouldn't buy a motor off of ebay. There are some good places that you can get SRs from here in GA like Jarco and Jhot. You can go look at what your getting before you get it. If you buy one off the internet your better off going with a well know place like heavythrottle or something.

you can pick up a pretty new sr20 for about $1600 , i think . at least thats what they were when i was lookin at em . are you going to go with the 240s or somthin different ? the 240 is the best all around drift car that nissan makes ( in my opinion) because of the weight distribution . drop an sr20 in that thing and with the right setup and a few mods you have a decent drift car . thats just my thoughts anyway.

I don't know. Time will tell. Right now I'm just exploring options... I've got at least a month; I've still gotta get this integra parted and out of my garage, first.

yeah i rather the s13 instead of the s14s , they just look better . i havnt seen any 280 drift cars but im sure they have em. im not sure how well they would work though , i think there pretty heavy . but yeah explore your options and do your homework . im sure youll end up with a good car .

If I end up getting into drift...I'll be learning weight transfer first. I've gotten my civic to "drift". Just using weight transfer. No ebrake and no rear-wheel power.

You're missing the fact that I want a new project. Not to come hang at the varsity or hang in packs, or to rice out. Just something different than what I have now, and probably for teh occasionaly track use. I'm one of 60(about) counted EF's on ImportAtlanta...I don't bitch. I think it's cool because it allows another opportunity for someone to build one up and sometimes to see new ideas take place. I suggest you quit looking out for yourself, and start looking at the fact that someone else wants to share the love of the automotive industry; specific model or not. You can hardly judge what I know, and what my abilities are to learn.

i live out near the airport. i try not to drive my nissan to school, i only drive it during the day if it needs to be moved, and i make a point of not driving it on the weekends. my sisters roommate says she can hear the car if i have to go through town to get gas or i go for an apple pie at the mc ds when im done. cops usually leave me alone (every now and then theres a new guy) mostly because im not out fuckin around when normal people are tryin to get on with their lives. i got pulled over early one morning and the guy said, "im not gonna give you this ticket cause you didnt die on that turn back there. we catch you pullin that shit in the daylite and your ass is goin to jail." as long as your not dui you can pretty well get away with anything.

this is from my very small knowledge of nissans. but i personnally beleive the KA24de is a better motor than the sr20det. for the money atleast... why
its a 2.4 liter rather than the 2.0 liter sr's
it come stock on the usdm 240. so no need to invest into a swap.
what does that mean well instead of paying 3k or more for an sr swap, which u will do easily, you can drop that same 3k into a KA motor and build it and boost it some what at least and have a very good car.....
but again thats just my own opinions...

bad part about doing that is you'll have a lot of money into building a motor to compete with a stock SR20det, some would call it polishing a terd. I think I've seen a KA-T built making a little over 300 whp and you can get that with a few bolt ons on an SR. Just do your research and decide before hand what your goal is. You could probably build a KA-T reliably a little cheaper than swapping in a stock SR, but you won't have as much potential. It's all about what you want.
