Thread: 4age swap?

  1. #1

    Default 4age swap?

How would I know which is a black top and a silver top motor? I'm planning to do a swap into my 86 Corolla GTS. Can someone give me more detail about these two engines. By teling me which is which. Also which would be better to buy and easier to swap. Thanks

blacktop has a black valve cover and a silvertop has a silver valve cover....revolutionary i tell you!!

I have seen many examples of both...there are plenty of ways to tell them apart besides just the color.

    the black top:
    has 2mm larger throttles
    different air plenum
map sensored as opposed to AFM
the VIN on the block (obviously)
the tranny it comes with, if its a 6 speed def a Blacktop
    ECU is completely diff
    etc

i'm currently finishing up my my Silvertop swap into my AW11..should be fun

first the Blacktop was rated at 165 and the silvertop was 160(first N/A motor to make 100 hp per liter as well as first 5 valve head design from toyota). The small port GZE was the only 4age that was rated at 170 (later AE101 Levin/ SC14 Supercharged) they were both miss rated from the factory slightly, the silvertop way more then the blacktop. They were also rated using 100 ron gasoline and rated in PS rather then hp...which gets confused sometimes. The silvertops dyno at around 124-127whp bone stock while the blacktops come in at around 137-140whp....its more like: Blacktop 160-165 and the silvertop 150ish. In all honestly i would say the silvertop run on Blacktop electronics is the way to go (and what i did) the motors are much more stout and can take much more abuse. They are easier to modify, cheaper, easier to work on and can even take well to boost (though slight due to such high CR)

My complete (92) Gen 1 Silvertop (motor, harness, ecu) was $400, then custom Harness $350, Blacktop Ecu $100, extra tune up misc parts $170....so for ab $1000 i got everything in and running in my AW11. Your Corolla would take half the work, and run on BT electronics would look and sound damn sweet with open throttles. Also, My set up, with straight pipe exhaust, slight timing advance and open throttles put down 134whp @8300 rpms /107 ft lbs @5200 rpms. On my personal swap i'm waiting on my under the bucket shim set up/Kamakazi and Toda 288/272 VVT cams.....with slightly larger throttle stacks and those cams i should be putting down in the mid to high 160's

Read somewhere that the GZE made 185 hp, can anyone verify this? I'm thinking about getting one from someone who's going all motor, hope i can get it on the cheap.

No, there was never a 4a motor rated that high. Also the 4AGZE is a supercharged motor (Hence the Z instead of just 4AGE ). so its never going to be "all motor" anyway. An AE101 Smallport GZE can be had for ab $1000 including tranny, harness, ecu..ect...they are a super PITA to wire into anything, but with the SC14 supercharger over the SC12 (what we got here on the Largeport GZE in MKI MR2's) you have a slight performance potential increase. If your friend is really looking to go all motor with a 4a, he needs to start reading up as much ab that motor as he can. Its def not like a honda motor where bolt-ons will increase performance....Toyota built these motors to the upper limits of what they were capable of, while still remaining reliable. If he really is interested in all motor, i also recommend he look into a High compression Redtop 4AGE out of a JDM AE92 (134hp). they run a 7 rib block, piston oil squirters, high comp pistons (10.3/1), Map sensored, lightened small port rods, No TVIS/EGR, and with the JDM ecu over the USDM version you get the factory timing/spark advance that wouldnt meet emissions standerds in the states). they make less hp stock then a 20valve, but have a much higher potential to make power. Formula Atlantic used them, running to 14,000 rpms and making 260whp N/A!!!
