that is the fastest method. they do make a socket to hold the crank pully, while you loosen the bolt.

I just remember when I was taking my friend's off his LS motor, I was on my back for 10 minutes with a regular socket wrench, pulley not moving, and it didn't come off at all.

If you dont have access to air, you can you a breaker bar and a chain wrench.
