Can you use a bill of sale to get your tag in georgia if you don't have a title.

I'm thinking of buying a older motorcycle(like 1988) and the owner has a bill of sale. Is that all I need to get a tag for the bike to make it street legal?

Where is the title?

Call the DMV in the morning and ask. The search I just did (which you can do yourself) said that it would be a couple hundred just to get that squared away.

Your best bet is to call the DMV and get information. Basically, you will have to get a notarized BOS from the seller, go to the title office and explain what is going on, get the title to it in your name, and go from there.

Honestly, stay away from it or take someone with you that knows bikes. Get the VIN and run it.

If bikes are like cars the cutoff was like 1985 or 1986 to not need a title but bikes could be diffrent. If the bike requires a title im not sure why the owner wouldnt have a title...that would just be to sketchy unless its a track only bike. Just call your local tag office or drop by....

my uncle had the same prob with one his bikes but where i live since his bike was an 84 they let him get a tag

What I would do is run the VIN! If it comes back clean then they should register it with just the Bill Of Sale.

It doesn't matter if the VIN is clean or not. His question concerns the title; not the VIN.

i had to title bond my bike when i bought it really wasnt a bad process it just took forever to actually get my title almost six months (this is not normal)

Usually what happens in this scenario is that the title comes back with a lien on it, in which case you are responsible for the lien if you ever want to tag the vehicle.

You can apply for a bonded title. They'll let you register right away and if everything checks out a couple months later you get the title.
