Looks like we may have a good turnout, i've posted this on both driftmechaniks.com and team-integra.net and have a few friends that aren't on the forums that want to go too...I'll have the list up soon.

My parents told me the "new" sheriff up there is cracking down on the mountain roads...hey john, do you think you can get Eddie Cole and Adam Scott to be deputies that day?

    Default hmm..

It isnt the local cops that I am worried about (obviously between you and i we graduated with half of the lumpkin sheriff's office!) Its the GSP! The new sheriff is paying to have extra GSP on the mountain until winter hits. There have been articles in the dahlonega paper every week about the sheriff targeting motorcyclists. He said it will be his personal duty to take care of the rising motorcycle problem we have in the mountains. I think it is horse shit but since I have to drive by the sheriffs house everday going up the mountain to the house I give him the one finger salute! And besides anybody that knows how to ride a bike knows its not the experienced riders that cause problems its the newbies with there drive out tags that crash and cause problems.

Oh and I will get the schedule for the local cops patroling the county on that day!

...exactlyyy, i know a few of the GSP's too but the problem is they don't talk much on the radio so I can't tell where they are at. We'll just need a couple scouts to run up first...hopefully i'll be able to make it up the weekend or sometime during the week before to check for any construction. Trying to get this Porsche brake kit together asap to do a lil R&D.

actually cars tend to be able to move up the hill faster than me because i only believe in using one lane where everyone else uses both... everyone feels the need to prove they can run with a bike up the mtn instead of running their own pace and holding a damn lane

cars can normally run faster through turns anyways, especially the bigger bikes..hayabusa, etc....just normally get left behind on the exit ...i wanna try out a T-Rex.

you guys can blow by them in cars doing 120 and i can pass following you doing about 70 on the bike and guess who they're gonna tag? . they profile bikes like mad up there, seen it with my own eyes on more than a few weekends. i've watched as cars blow by doing 65-70mph down 129 and GSP/lumpkin will just sit there, but then a sportbike will pass a few minutes later coming down at around the same pace and they will immediately jump in behind them like it's a matter of national security. i fail to see how a 3000lb car isn't more dangerous at those speeds than a 400lb sportbike, but as truegiant said it's due to the influx of noobs who think they can go buy a 600ss bike and suddenly they are posessed by the spirit of Rossi himself. 2 turns later up the mountain they find out they don't know how to lean and either cross into the oncoming lane or send their pretty bike off a cliff. happens every damn weekend too .

    /end rant

i'd have to agree with you. i can pretty easily outrun cars that are running a normal spirited pace up there, but i don't even try to get around the people that think if you're trying to overtake it's a race. i've been on the outside passing and have people send the tail of the car out being in over their heads trying to stay ahead of me for some reason.

I feel sorry for the bikes on hwy. 180...that one freakin suches cop is always tagging them. I only took the 955i up late afternoon & night and never had problems...and it's seems to be ok early morning but once lunch rolls around the mountains are crawling with them out to get you.

odd, he's always out like 12-2pm...i think it's the only patrol car. what pisses me off the most is he'll stop the bikes right on the road...that's not a good thing, especially through the tight turns right before the bridge on the suches side.

hmm - the reason i thinkg they also target bikes more is that there's a higher risk of death? I mean - no airbags or very few means of protection... I'd rather hit a tree going off a cliff in a car than with a bike... annyywayyys

    guess we're just cruisin

sortof, but their job is to protect the community, i can't decide whether they are being targeted more for protection or income...and cars are a much deadlier weapon than a bike, especially to other bikes, bicycles, pedestrians, etc...now a rider driving wrecklessing with a passenger should be targeted.

I should have 4 new fat and sticky Falken Azenis on the Corolla by the time the 30th comes around. Although I've somewhat lost interest in speeding (even driving quickly) on any mountain roads during the day time. I'd to go and tag along at a slightly slow pace... 1 (11mph+ over) ticket for me and my license is gone.

Does anyone ever go up into the mountains late at night?

    Default realization!

Tip for all noobs on the mountain!

Understand that some people naturally have a better driving ability than others. KNOW THAT IT IS O.K. to drive slow if necessary. There is no reason that you should drive outside your comfort zone just to impress someone else. Just because your car is capable of handling extremely well in the mountains does not mean that it will hang with a talented driver. You can ask Jason (speedminded), that even a stock ford ranger pickup with a descent driver can hang with a sportbike travelling at moderate speeds. When I was a instructor with a winston cup driving school the first thing we teach students is, just because our winston cup school cars will do 180+ easy, does not mean that you can drive them that fast. There are several people who will be attending this mountain run and I am sure that if you tell one of those people that you do not feel comfortable running mach10 up the mountain they will understand and pick a comfortable pace for everyone.

THERE are several who can vouch - You will only look like an ass if you drive outside your comfort zone and crash on the mountain. Like HiPSI said - he would rather cruise safely at 70 than be stupid at 100! (Not exactley what he said but close enough)

I'm with that - it'll be my first mountain run, maybe we just do a little cruising at a comfy pace to get people just sorta know where their comfort zones are?

I also dont want to be one of the arrogant assholes who cut to the inside of left turns of the oncoming lane - ARGH!

    (these are generalized for everyone)

#1: Stay in 1 lane... if you have to use 2 you're in over your head

#2: ALWAYS check your 6 before changing lanes, bikes will come up on you faster than you can think and if you just cut lanes you may end someone's life (hell it could be me)

#3: no matter what everyone else is doing, you will run a pace that's comfortable for YOU and you only... you will not get left behind or ditched. there are plenty of stopping points along every part of the route and if there's a turn at least one person will wait for you to show you where you need to go.

#4: NEVER EVER EVER CROSS THE DOUBLE YELLOWS... this is completely inexcusable and a quick way to die.

#5: don't let neonracer near lighter fluid at vogel

#6: when on a road that's a single lane in both directions, don't worry about the person behind you. if they can't deal with your pace then you can either be nice and find a pulloff to let them pass, or if it happens to be a bike just slow up on a straight slightly and wave them by.

#7: leaf lookers and bicyclists will be out in large numbers now that fall is starting, watch out for pedestrians at trail crossings and pulloff areas. they are the ones that will call the cops to the mountains and end the fun early, just be courteous.

#8: if you're on a road with driveways/houses/churches then slow it down passing these spots. again if you piss off the locals then the fun ends.

#9: refer to #1-#8 to refresh your memory

#10: just use some damn common sense.

    other tips:

-don't ride the ass of someone on a bike no matter how slow they are going
-always try to judge someone's movements... if they are hopping lanes or hauling ass down the straights and parking it in the corners, lay back and let them go or find a safe place to pass and make your presence known
-if you see someone on a bike tapping the top of their helmet with their hand, it means there is police action up ahead, slow the hell down... it's nice to wave back if they warned you btw

Stay in your lane, let faster cars by.
Just be cautious at all times and never let your guard down.
I've only done "mountain runs" very very late at night (1-4 am) and with the roads being damned near empty it requires 100% concentration on the drivers behalf.
Seems like there's a whole slew of others things to worry about during the day so just stay alert and don't take your eyes off the road for a second.
