    RULES & QUESTIONS!

    Soap Box Derby on Wikipedia.

    Questions:

    1) Are we making our own go karts with lawnmowers and ****/ renting them? going to a place? low-tech and crazy?
yes... you can use anything you want to build your cart but it just has to be built by your team. No Motor Vehicles.
    2) Oooh oooh can we have like PIT CREW and stuff?
I want you to have a pit crew...if needed, cheerleaders and more.
    3) Can we still race if we are over 250 lbs?
Yes, but the judges will take that to heart.
4)What time do I need to be there?
Please be there at 10:00am every year to check in your cart.

    Rules:

    A: BUILDING YOUR CAR

    TIPS:
Before you begin construction of your car, you may find it helpful to draw some plans. If you are having trouble deciding on a design for your car, you might try searching the internet or your local library. There are many existing plans for soap box derby cars that you may use as a guide. Another option you might consider is to find the components for your car first, and then design your plans accordingly. Some places you might find helpful when searching for parts are thrift stores, salvage yards, hardware stores, etc. You might also consider the venue when designing your car, especially its wheels. The race will be held in the lower parking lot at the Starlight Six Drive In. the race area will be cleared of debris as best as possible, but keep in mind that the lot is a wavy, terraced (and fun!) drive in parking lot that has some imperfections such as cracks and uneven areas. If you are having trouble designing mechanisms for steering and/or braking, simplicity may be the best option. A simple steering mechanism to build is an axle that pivots at a single point (such as a bolt), and that is steered with ropes or cables, or with your feet. A simple brake mechanism is a lever that applies direct pressure to at least one of your wheels (as in a Big Wheel). Before you begin construction of your car, you might also consider how you will transport it on the day of the race. If you plan to transport your car with a certain vehicle, you might determine the dimensions for your plans by first measuring the available area in your transport vehicle (trunk, truck bed, trailer, etc.). Also, you might consider building your car in separate parts that can be assembled at the venue. If you do so, please be sure to allow adequate time to have your car completely assembled by race time. We strongly recommend that you make accommodations for securing your car when not in use. Locking brakes, wheel chocks, and bicycle chains are good ways to keep your car from rolling downhill un-piloted. You may also find it helpful to attach a ring or handle to your car, to which you can attach a rope or cable for use in securing your car as well as for pulling your car back up the hill. Good Luck!

A-1: You (and/or your team) must build your own car. You may not use a ready-built vehicle of any kind. You may use components from other vehicles (wheels, brakes, steering assemblies, etc.) provided that you have re-configured them into your own unique design. You are encouraged to be creative with the design of your car, including building your car according to a theme and naming your car.

A-2: Your car must not exceed a weight of 250 lbs.

A-3. Your car must have four (4) wheels, at least two (2) of which must remain on the ground at all times.

A-4. Your car must be completely gravity-driven, and may not include any sort of propulsion mechanism nor be pushed in any way.

A-5. Your car must have the ability to steer.

A-6. Your car must have the ability to brake.

A-7: In the event that your car does not safely meet these requirements, the race officials may decide at their discretion to disqualify the driver.

    B: RACING

B-1: All drivers must sign a waiver form before racing. Waiver forms will be provided during registration on the day of the race.

B-2: All drivers must wear a helmet while racing. You may use a motorcycle helmet, bicycle helmet, sports helmet, etc., as long as it provides significant protection in the event of a collision.

B-3: Only one driver may operate your car per race. You may not carry any passengers. Your team may alternate drivers in the event that your team proceeds to additional rounds of racing.

B-4: Each race shall be an elimination round; two drivers shall race each other, and the winner shall advance to the next round.

B-5: Drivers shall leave the starting line to begin the race only when signaled by the race official. Leaving the starting line before a signal is given by the race official shall constitute a false start. Drivers are allowed one false start per round. More than one false start per round shall result in disqualification.

B-6: Drivers shall remain in their lane and not interfere with the operation of the opposing driver's vehicle. This shall include, but is not limited to, making contact with the opposing driver's vehicle. Exiting your lane or interfering with the operation of/making contact with the opposing driver's vehicle shall result in disqualification.

B-7: Each driver is allowed to have a team/pit crew to assist them. Each driver's team/pit crew shall not interfere with the operation of the race. Interference shall include, but is not limited to, pushing your car, entering the race lanes, and interfering with the operation of the opposing driver's car. Interference by any of your team members shall result in disqualification.

B-8: The winner of each round shall be the first driver to cross the finish line in their vehicle. In the event that a vehicle stops before reaching the finish line, it may not be pushed. In the event that both vehicles stop before reaching the finish line, the winner shall be the driver whose vehicle travels the farthest. In the event that both vehicles stop before reaching the finish line AND travel the same distance, the race officials may decide at their discretion to call another race or to send both drivers to the next round.

B-9: Drivers shall be present at the time of each race in which they are scheduled to compete. In the event that a driver is not present at race time, said driver shall be disqualified and the opposing driver shall win the round. In the event that both drivers are not present at race time, both drivers shall be disqualified.

B-10: In the event of a tie between two drivers, the race officials may decide at their discretion to call another race or to send both drivers to the next round.

B-11: All drivers shall agree to arrive for each race in a condition appropriate for operating a controlled vehicle. In the event of a driver's impairment due to drugs, alcohol, or any other substance or condition, the race officials may decide at their discretion to disqualify the driver.

B-12:: All drivers shall agree that the outcome of each race shall be decided by the race officials, and that their decisions shall be final. All drivers shall agree that the race officials may alter and/or append the rules in order to make concessions in the event of unforseen factors including, but not limited to, weather, time constraints, and disputes.

    B-13: HAVE FUN!
