PS3 is being used to try to push Blu-Ray into the mainstream, but i just don't see it happening... no games have been made on it as of yet to take advantage of it (if i'm not mistaken) and if it goes like the PSP propriatary media it will bomb... i read/heard companies are trying to get rid of their PSP movies and are no longer purchasing them b/c its a losing market.
ps. hd-dvd attachment is coming out for xbox for the x-mas season![]()
well i can care less which one makes it, but i hope sony gets fucked... first they tried this with cd-roms what 16 years ago, then the tapes, now the fucking cds... its bs.

well so far every random media sony has come up with...(mini disc...) has died..
i see hd-dvd for sure..and even though they have the bluray shit for ps3...its $600 freaking dollars... not everone is going to have them, or want to spend th emoney on one (like me)
I'm telling you right now the only reason HD-DVD will beat Blu Ray is one thing, marketing. The average consumer (read: Not techno geeks) see something called blu ray and they think "WTF is that, must be some chinese knock off thing. They can't even spell blue right." Then they look at the HD DVDs and say "Hey, I know what HD means, and I know what DVD means. These things must kick ass!"

blue ray player ps3 600
hd dvd player 500
xbox 360 + hd attachment 600
hrmm costs about the same to me?
as for support? more major manufactuerers are making blu-ray dvd players rather than hd. go to each website and see.
blu-ray will win this one
hd dvd players have been around like what 7-8 months now.. how many are sold world wide?.. there are 400,000 blu-ray players gonna be sold in the US alone due to the ps3 not counting stand alones or world wide?
im going with blu-ray
very good points in this thread, but im gonna have to go with what 5thgcelica said, everything sony does flops, so im gonna say hd dvd in the long run

Their movie production companies doing great.
A company cant have "everything" flop and be one of the largets companies in the world.
XBR series lcd's best picture outta any tv period
sxrd series projection tv, best picture in projections.
wega engine and bravia engine best digital image processing engine in tv's.
blue ray players have already ropped in price before their full release. they were supposed to be 1300-1500 now ur gonna find em 800- 1000. wait till every company has theirs released and in full production
I have a feeling that the high-def format war will end up just like the DVD format war. One company will bring to market an optical system that can play both of the competing media types.
Ricoh is said to have already developed the necessary optics to read both formats and NEC is already shipping a dual format decoder chip.
I don't know why I even keep up with anything related to the new HD disk formats, I have way too many dvds to even think about changing out the collection. I might think about getting a few select titles that I already own, but that list would be pretty small.
I'm also waiting for the HDMI interface to grow a few generations before I decide to dump the component video input.
Here's a read for ya:

Precisely. It is exactly this same war that is delaying total customer acceptance of either format. I, for one am not going to "bet" on one format to then have it go belly-up and me having to sell and replace my titles yet again. Everyone can still remember the Divx fiasco. Heck. Even the war between sacd and dvd-audio resulted in the virtual death of both !! CD's are still king.Originally Posted by PHxS

Ok it's like this...... HD-DVD does cost around $500 while Blu-ray is at Best Buys for $999.99 right now from Samsung and Sony to follow. Look people HD-DVD shows in highest resolution of 1080p and the Blu-ray in 1080i. Now!.... Most plasma and LCD and DLP tv's show in 720p(highest) with only a few that shows in 1080p and one(at best buys by Samsung) that shows in 1080i!! Yes sooner or later the plasmas LCD's and DLP tv's will show in 1080p and 1080i resolution. The PS3 is in blu-ray format but do you honestly think it's going to be the same as the Blu-ray DVD players???....NO!! Why in the hell would Sony have their PS3 put out the same 1080i format as there DVD player that's coming out??? That would be STUPID!! Why would you pay $999.99 for the DVD player when you can pay $599.99 for the PS3 and have the same player AND the game too!!! Come on Sony is not going to cut themselves like that!! The blu-ray player inside the PS3 will be a down graded version of the "real" blu-ray DVD players in the store. How downgradable??? Don't know. But I'll say this unless you are a COMPLETE GEEK you WILL NOT be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 1080i resolutions and even if you do it wouldn't matter becuase when you go to Best buys and walk through the tv section and see "demo" movies playing on the nice plasmas or LCD's tv's they are in 720p format!!! That's right...UNLESS other wise stated.
Look damn good doesn't!! So why would 1080p and 1080i make a difference?? Yes the X-Box360 will have a HD-DVD "add-on" for $179.99 in November that will show in 1080p format. $179.99 versus $500 for the HD-DVD player!! sound good....well it's what... $399.99(360)+179.99(HD-DVD add-on) which comes out to $480+tax so it's about the same, it;s just you have a great gaming system too. So there you have it. Hope that helps.
In the future when all plasmas and LCD and DLP tv;s show in 1080p and 1080i format then this discussion will be inrelavent. Oh you guys with a lot of money shouldn't even waste your time reading this cause you can just go buy whatever that sounds like it's the best and move on and so forth.... must be nice![]()

xbox 360 = 1080i
ps3 = 1080p
also most lcd's are full 1080i at 1366x768 resolution where as plasmas are 1024x720 or 1280x720 if ur lucky.
also if you can do math, 399.99 + 179.99 is not 480.. thats 580...
furthermore you'd have to be blind to not be able to see the difference between a 1080i resolution tv and 1080p. you can easily notice the pixelation in the 1080i. also there are ALOT of lcd's available in 1080p and alot of projections as well. Not yet plasma's as the ones that are 1080p are extremely expensive.
in fact toshiba has a 42" 1080p lcd u can get for under 2300 as does sharp.
yes toshiba has sold more hd dvd players now under 50k..
by the end of the the year there will be 400,000 blu-ray players in the US and more world wide. thanks only tot he ps3 add the standalone units and the market already has about 10:1 blu-ray:hd-dvd players on the market.
yeah im gonna agree here, i have a HP 1080i lcd tv, and i have seen 1080p programming, and i can definitely tell the difference....i = integrated, p = progressive, meaning you cant see the lines nearly as much as integrated. thats why i usually watch HD programs in 720p format, because it usually looks better than 1080i, IMO.Originally Posted by DemonEyez

NO I'm afraid you are confused...go to your local best buys if you don't believe me. HD-DVD is in 1080p and blu-ray is in 1080i. And yes I had a typo on the 399+179 so you got me there.Originally Posted by DemonEyez

sorry the guys at best buy are wrong. Here is the true specs tho
hd dvd is capable of 1080p but no one is producing a 1080p player in hd format or producing at 1080p movies. They are all 1080i
whereas the blu-ray players are 1080p players and have 1080p movies.
Now when i say capable, the formatting is available, the technology is available but no one is implementing or has stated plans to. therefor it doesnt truly exist in the market. So the guys at best buy who are saying that the hd dvd at their store is 1080p are full of shit. in fact most of my experience with the people working at best buy is that they dont know shit about anything in their store.
1080i.... interlace, meaning they produce all odd lines first and then go back and finish up with the even ones making fast motion a little choppy.
1080p....progressive, meaning it gets all the lines at the first go around. it is basically the processing and for sports and intense gaming, progressive comes out on top.
I got my 1080p lcd ready for whatever the market wants to throw my way.
WOW, you really contradicted yourself, you talk about how it must be nice to have enough money to walk into best buy but if you were really makin $30 per hour then you would know what its like to walk into these places and go on daily shopping spreesOriginally Posted by 112480
. Im not bragging about my financial stability but hearing people whine about others having the money to buy what they want is just you being a prime example of a hater. Dont hate, go out and do something to become that guy that always gets what he wants.
sorry but the determining factor for new DVD technology will be industry support...
Toshiba = HD DVD and Sony = Blu Ray
here is the difference...
Sony is going out on a limb again and trying to push their market w/ a very weak release of PS3 at the price of 600$; sorry but thats not enough. no one is going to go buy a 999$ dvd player just to have a little bit better video/sound.
HD DVD will be launching very soon in PC's this quarter + Xbox 360 for a 200$ attachment.
Cost HD DVD will win you can go buy a HD player for 499$, your going to be hard pressed to find a player cheaper then PS3 and with the shortage of PS3 your not going to be getting a PS3 for 600$... they will be on ebay for 1000+ for sure after release.
Bottomline if Blue Ray goes out how Sony marketed PSP movies, Blu Ray isn't going to last.![]()
yep hd will be coming out for the pc, but blu-ray is already out along with blu-ray burners.Originally Posted by admin
the price of blu-ray players will decrease ALOT over the next 6 months. right now their expensive because they havnt gotten to full production.
blue-ray is 2x the price of hd ... no one in their right mind is going to pay that for technology that is already out there isn't an advantage its like buying the new DIGITAL RECORD PLAYER for 1000$. its like reinventing the wheel. sony better work on marketing and backing or this will end up like PSP media.Originally Posted by DemonEyez
Blu Ray is exspensive right now cause its all about how bad people want one, Sont knows that people will pay $1000 for them right now cause they are the new thing and thats what home theater is all about these days, keeping up with the times, after alot of people buy them the price will go down so the less fortunate can afford one too, its smart on sonys part to charge so much right now IMO, they just need to know when to drop the price. How much are the actual HD DVDs and Blu Ray dics????Originally Posted by DemonEyez
actually its a bad idea as far as marketing goes for a product to be higher then its competitor considering they are both new market technologyOriginally Posted by bdydrpdmazda
HD DVD = 499 /// media = 19.99+
Blu-Ray = 999 /// media = 24.99+
its all going to come down to availability + cost thats always been the name of the game from floppy, zip, super, ram drive, dvd, harddrive, etc... whoever can get it in the consumers hands first will windo a quick search on dvd media on ebay and see how many are listed for both. i know best buy online was sold out on HD DVD players as well.
yeah market penetration is key
thus the ps3 pushing more blu-ray players than hd dvd players sold world wide is something to watch.
if your a movie company. and you see that by end of year lets say at most 100,000 HD dvd players sold.. and around 700,000 blu-ray ps3 + 50,000 maybe blu-ray standalones.. what would u make a movie for?
you need to check your sources again b/c HD DVD is already ahead they have sold out in most retailers b/c of the low price (ebay as low as 300 / best buy 499). toshiba was reported taking a loss of 200$ per unit; which is just how xbox has broken into the gaming world so fast. xbox is releasing their HD setup for xmas for 199$ and they have over 5 million units sold as June; which means 5+ million possible people for HD upgradeOriginally Posted by DemonEyez

its already been annouced over 200 titles available for HD DVD for the holidays with Warner Bros, Paramount, New Line, HBO,etc supportingOctober 12, 2006, 2:12 AM
According to Nielsen data in August, HD DVD sold three times as many discs as any other high-definition format, including Sony's Blu-ray. In addition, the survey company also found that customers of the format owned an average of 8.4 DVDs.
true i forgot about the xbox. but there wont be 5 million upgrade kits avail so soon.
HD dvd are sold out but still overall volume sales are low. Its been out now about 3-4 months and 6 months in other nations. Average dvd ownership is of course high as why would u buy a high end player and no discs. either way theres always argueing but in the end we'll see
of course no one will know the end of the story but so far HD looks like the way to go... seriously Sony needs to get with the program; they aren't even pushing the PS3 as anything more then a game console; which means they won't be breaking into the HT market which consist of alot more of the market then console gamingOriginally Posted by DemonEyez
xbox has ps3 covereded up for sales so sony has a long road ahead of them to prove themselves in both the console + media market. this is almost like debateing xbox vs. ps2... numbers are far greater but for a a company to come out like microsoft and say "we can take a billion dollar loss each year" and be proud of what they are doing chipping away at sony's market... shit now look at them they got the jump on everyone a full year for next gen consoles... just wait for vista to launch everyone will wish they had a 360 to complete their HT.

Other than that, while the 700.000 seems very optimistic, HD Dvd players are continued to be sold as we speak, so I am almost sure it will be more that 100.000. Even more when the HDDVD upgrade for the Xbox comes along.
You should also know that due to the "little problems" with the initial blue ray players, some dvd review sites are "holding off" in reviewing blue-ray titles, until a reference player can be obtained for fair comparison. DVDfile is only reviewing HDDVD titles at the moment....
And also, quoted from DVDFILE: "A helpful reader who placed a pre-order for the Sony's BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc player on the very first day SonyStyle.com accepted them wrote to say that he expects to receive one of SonyStyle’s first five hundred units, possibly to be shipped today. But yesterday, there was an article published indicating that a Sony spokesman confirmed that there were additional firmware issues that had to be resolved and the player wouldn’t be available to consumers until December 4th."
And yet "Sigh. This does not bode well for Blu-ray Disc and Sony in particular, exacerbating the already unfortunate situation associated with the PS 3’s reduced production level. I must console myself with the knowledge that within a few months, this very rocky Blu-ray Disc product introduction will be behind us and the market will finally have an opportunity to assess both formats and vote with its collective wallet." Again quoted from DVDFile

Neither will there be 700.000+ PS3 players available so soon. THey have reduced production due to some processor or parts shortages. So expect the markup on these "hot" players to raise the price into the $ 800's.Originally Posted by DemonEyez
