Paul would get out smarted, out played and beat. Stockton is the all time leader in steals and assists for a reason.

Typical young person opinion.... always taking flash over substance. John Stockon was a beast. Everyone hated playing vs Stockton because of how physical he played. All young people think this new era of flashy ball players are so much better than the older generation. What did it do for Lebron and Wade vs Dirk? Why does Tim Duncan have 4 championship rings????? How does Manu continue to dominate????? You dont have to look like an and1 mix tape to score..... John Stockton is the best pure PG of all time........... past and PRESENT included. Chris Paul most certainly included.

A lot of people make this same type of mistake, they automatically assume because somebody came before the other one, that because they played in an older era of basketball that they are better by default. Bad choice here. There's a difference between passing to kenyon martin at the top of the key and passing to karl malone at the top of the key, wouldn't you agree? Even though stockton has had superior teams to chris paul's teams lets compare # and talk some basketball.

    CARER stats:

    Chris Paul........18.8 PPG, 2.4 SPG, 9.8 APG, 4.5 RPG, 85% FT, 36% 3PT, 47% FG, 2.45 TO/GAME

    John Stockton..... 13.1 PPG, 2.1 SPG, 10.5 APG, 2.7 RPG, 83% FT, 38% 3PT, 51% FG, 2.82 TO/GAME

116 3 point attempts per year, 305 field goals attempted per year.... stockton

181 3 point attempts per year, 373 field goals attempted per year.... paul

So to sum this all up. Karl malone is only good for .7 APG? You attempt 65 fewer 3 point shots per year then paul and you only shoot 2% better? You attempt 68 fewer field goals per year and you shoot 4% better? Do you think stockton is faster then paul? Do you think stockton is quicker then paul? Do you think stockton is stronger then paul? Do you HONESTLY think stockton would be able to stay in front of paul? And to never have averaged 20 ppg in a season.

Dont get it twisted, stockton is a LEGEND. But to think that his game would translate to today's speed is ridiculous. Don't think his assists and steal records won't get challenged by rondo, paul, some future pg. BTW 19 years in the nba will also help your records, thats a long time to play with no injuries or set backs. Invest in nba league pass next year, watch chris paul's games. He wasn't first team nba and defensive nba for no reason.

Side note: Who has the most game winning shots in the nba over the past 5 seasons? Durant, Kobe, Lebron(lol), Wade, Paul etc? They talked about this the other day on nba tv (game time i think it was)

look above for your substance. dont ignore it.

Btw how old do you think I am? I could say the same thing about your statement claiming Tim Tebow as the greatest college player to ever play. VERY typical young person opinion as well. Just saying.

jdm94coupe, you have to realize to other important factors in your "equation" of Paul being better than Stockton. You're looking at Stockton's stats that span a 20 year career versus stats across only 7 years. Let's see if Paul's stats ranks anywhere near Stockton's after a 20 year career before you start dreaming that Paul is better.

For that matter, let's see if Paul even makes it 20 years.

    I don't think he will.

Also, the game of basketball itself is different. Not the game, but the way it's played. Stockton was a point guard and that's what Stockton did. As was mentioned before, players don't usually stick to any sort of position anymore. It's really hard to compare how the two would have fared against each other because the game has changed so much in the last couple of decades. Later, QD.

I see what you are saying. But to say that stockton would dominate shows he has never watched the two play consistently. I've seen both play, stockton is a legend. No doubt about that. But I know Chris paul will go down as one of the best point guards to ever play the game as well. Dominate on both ends of the floor. I'm not even saying Chris Paul is better, what i was saying was i'd love to have seen them play against each other. Then he responded with that ridiculous comment, as usual.

BTW to say that I'm dreaming paul is better is also out of line. Even with his superior teams AND coaching, not to mention playing with another hall of fame player his entire career, he is behind chris paul in A LOT of categories.

I think they said Melo has the most game winning shots.

Stockton was a much more physical player, cp3 has much more offensive skills. Two totally different players

Not really considering that, right now, him being the best is just that...........a dream. Let him finish out a lengthy career first and see where he is. He may quit next year or he may play another ten years. And if he sticks around, he may well get progressively worse for some reason. How I like to refer to people like Paul is "the potential to be............", you know. Later, QD.

I really think its a lame argument because they are 2 totally different player in two totally different eras. CP3 is much more offensively minded than Stockton was, and rightfully so. Stockton didnt have to score, he had Malone and a host of other GREAT shooters (hornacek) etc. CP3 has who? Blake Griffin lol

Stockton is a hall of famer easy. I wouldnt say CP3 is a hall of famer yet.

I also wouldnt say Stockton played bad defense, he was 6'1, little guys are bad to look at defensive wise.

You beat me too it...... Stockton's 20 year avg is higher than Paul's peak........... Stockton avg'd 15 APG in his prime..............

Wtf are you basing this opinion on?????????????????????????? Stockton is the ALL TIME LEADER IN STEALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stockton got tons of complains about his defense and physical play. Stockton did the hidden things that dont show up on a stat sheet....... hard picks, throwing his body into you, sneaky elbows..... there's a reason opponents hated and respected Stockton.

One thing i hate about arguing sports is when people give someone credit for things that havnt done yet or might do or have the potential to do..........

Chris Paul may go down as the best PG ever... who knows...... but he hasnt done anything yet.........

Stockton however.... his name is all over the record books and hes a hall of famer.

yeah.... im SOOOOOOOOOOO ALONE in thinking Tim Tebow is the best college player ever........................

Tebows stats are obnoxious....... you would have a hard time duplicating Tebow's career on a video game. For a QB most known for being a runner..... his career QB rating is the highest EVER. He did it a major school in the most physical and defensive conference in college football. He did it in an era where there was no single dominant dynasty.... he had to play vs some of the best teams in history. Tebow left the SEC with a higher QB rating than Peyton Manning and more rushing TDs than Herschel Walker...............

There's a mother fucking statue of Tebow outside of Florida and the ink on his degree is still wet.

He had the best team in college. Full of nfl players. not hard to beat the sec when your defense is the best in the ncaa. not to mention he was getting blocks from pro bowl lineman...... dont get me twisted, he was good.... but better then barry sanders, lol. joke.

You answered your own statement. The main reason he is #1 is because he played 20 years. and you are most definitely wrong about his 20 year average. he averaged 10.5apg for his career

    chris paul: 11.6apg in 07-08, 11.0apg in 08-09, 10.7apg in 09-10

so 3/7 years hes been in the nba he has averaged higher then stocktons career totals. and he passed to a hall of fame legend. chris paul passed to who? oh btw, chris paul is the smartest player in the league, he practically coached the clippers this year. he dominated a memphis team far superior to his team.

but anyway..... i guess we can get back to miami/boston now, lol

Again, you're comparing incomparables. Stockton averaged 10./apg over a 20 year career. Looking at his stats, he did well above that career total in ten of his twenty seasons. In fact, in eight of those seasons, he averaged more assists per game than Paul has ever done. If you want to insist this is a comparison and you dig deeper, you'll see that Stockton still has the edge as the better point.

Chris Paul was a great player on a teal of scrubs (new Orleans) and now he's the best player on a 6-7 seed team in the west. He clearly makes a team better, but he's not even in the top 10 all time PG conversation. Not yet.

Yeah, Tebow's 4 year career with 2 national titles, being 1 game away from a 3rd, being on the Heisman ballot 3 times and deserving to win 2 of them, and being the only QB in the history of college football to win 2 maxwell awards is better than Barry Sanders 1 good season of college football.

YES. Clearly...... and without logical argument against it. Tim Tebow had a better college career than Barry Sanders.

are you fucking retarded? you're saying Chris Paul has passed Stockton's career avg because individual seasons of Paul's career are higher than Stockton's career avg that spanned over 20 years????

Stockton avg'd 8 APG in his 3rd season in the NBA. Then avg'd 14 APG in his next 5 seasons. 12 APG for his next 4 seasons. Even playing for 20 years is an accomplishment, Stockton was a relevant player for 20 years and retired with gas in the tank. You realize you're comparing the intelligence of a guard whos strong point is isolation vs one that pretty much invented the pick and roll?

You're swinging from Chris Paul's nuts pretty hard. The guy hasnt done anything yet.

seriously...... let loose of Paul's nutsack so we can have an objective argument about this.

John Stockon has the highest single season APG in the history of the NBA. And the 2nd,4th,5th and 6th..........

This guy named Magic played at the same time as Stockton, heard of him?

You need to listen to what youre hearing. If you think Chris Paul is on any all time list for PGs... i dont know what to tell you......

Chris Paul wouldnt top the list of best all time ACTIVE PGs in the NBA right now.

and trust me im far from on chris pauls nuts. this coming from a guy you would think impregnated tim tebows mom. you obviously have not watched more then 10 chris paul's games. i understand you guys probably didnt invest in the nba league pass, but i did, i recorded and watched more nba basketball then 99.9% of the people in the state. for the people saying chris paul isnt better then rondo/parker/ etc.... the nba doesnt show favoritism when they name their nba 1st teams and nba defensive 1st teams. tony parker's defense is trash compared to paul, and his passing is nothing compared to pauls. he plays on a substantially better team then paul. he took a team that wouldnt make the playoffs with any other pg in the nba and made them the 5th seed in the west, and was a few games from the 3rd seed. rondo makes great passes, but other then rpg and a few more assists then paul he isnt shit compared to paul either. and yes tony parker killed westbrook and looked good in the first two games. but look at what cp3 did against westbrook the sg. he went 3/4 against okc this year, and dropped 24 second half points on him and killed him and durant in the 4th quarter. (with a trash ass team)

but seriously im done talking to people who dont watch the seasons games, and tune in when the playoffs start. not all of you, but i can tell who watches and who doesnt.

Do you HONESTLY believe that? He finished 3rd in the MVP of the nba voting. Behind 2 hall of fame players and in front of the 2nd best PG in the nba. parker.

you cant predict the future............. no matter how good a player is.... assuming they will play for 20 years is stupid.

Look at Shawn Kemps career for a perfect example. In his prime he was one of the most dominant players in history.... had you of assumed he was gonna do that for the rest of his career.............

    you would be very mistaken.

Anyone that thinks cp3 is top 10 all time is a fair weather Noob fan that is ignoring the last 30-40 years of basketball.

How long has he been in the league? 5 years? Less?

    He's not better than:
    Magic
    Isiah
    Stockton
    Nash
    Kidd
    Oscar
    Cousy
    Parker
    Kj
    hardaway

Hell TODAY. He might be a top 5

    Deron. Williams
    D rose
    westbrooke
    Parker
    Paul
    rubio

Hes good man but he isn't near the greats yet

    Lebron/Durant
    Kevin love
    Parker
    Kobe

Would have been my top 4.

I dont know how to get it thru ur thick head that you cant compare 5 years of a players career to 20 years of another players career.

If a player avgs 20 points per game for 3 seasons are we to assume he's going to avg 20 points per game for the next 17 seasons??????

The best 2 point guards in the NBA right now are still playing. Chris Paul is sitting on his couch.

lmao. without the hall of fame players on their teams they would definitely be at home. if you cant see that, you cant see anything.

Rose has an MVP, he didn't place 3rd LOL

Parker has what, 3 NBA titles?

Paul is a top 5 today, I'd still take Rondo anyday of the week.
