Unhappy Vancouver 2010 Georgian Luger Dies In Wreck

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – An Olympic official with direct knowledge of the situation says a men's luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia has died after a crash during training. The official tells The Associated Press that the International Olympic Committee received confirmation of Nodar Kumaritashvili's death. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the 21-year-old luger's family hadn't been notified yet.

An official statement is to be released soon.

Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled near the finish Friday, went over the track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler Sliding Center.

I saw something earlier about a lot of the lugers being worried about the track being so fast.

why would they not pad the polls or put up some sort of netting to keep these guys from flying into the polls. I see a lawsuit coming...

According to the news earlier, they claim he went off the track doing 88mph. They clocked another luger last year at 95 mph. That's just too damn fast IMO.

It's going to be an interesting event this year to say the least.

They've put up a retaining wall at the last turn and made the men start from where the woman do further down the track to slow their speeds.
