he has to pay for a membership to, but i do believe he can get a month free!! its the silver membership, its like a free trial!

To play, you have to have gold iirc.
He will have to have his own subscription and his own name on the xbox
but you two could play halo under seprate names so you both get the points. unfortunately COD does not allow the same benefit
