80GB - 100% BW Compatible w/ Updates. Download the latest updates via PS Online or DL them onto a flashdrive then upload onto your PS3 via the instructions availabled on the official website. Takes about 10 minutes. Also, the 80GB has a built-in upscaler to make your older games run smoother and look prettier. It's a very noticeable difference on some titles (.hack//G.U. for example). Good luck finding one though. Your best bet would be via Gamestop's official website. I found one in Georgia (Marietta) and picked it up immediately because other people were calling for it too.

I've had my 80GB for a few months now and have 0 complaints with PS, PS2, or PS3 titles.
Uhh, are you sure you did not get your info mixed up? As far as I know 60gb is about 99% BC while 80GB is about 80-85% BC, but not the other way around. You are right about 60Gb using chip and 80GB using software emulator. Sony promised that they will constantly working on BC for 80GB but who know if they will deliver (like M$). 60GB does have upscale and smooth out option.

To the OP, if you care a lot about BC then either get your hand on 60GB or 80GB, but not 40GB. 60 is best, but hard to find nowaday. And if you don't care about BC, chrome bezel around dvd slot, and no memory cards slot, then get 40gb.
