1080P large flat screen or 1080Pp projector?

wanted to know if there was a quality difference in the picture of a 1080P bigscreen and a 1080Pp projector? also what brands i want to look into for each. I know that if i get a projector it would be best in a basement or dark room, but im just trying to figure out if a projector in its best situation will be as clear/detailed as having a tv. also what is the P in 1080p or tv's and the Pp for projectors? pixels? projected pixels?

also wanted to see what price range would leave me with a nice projector over some cheap brand.

if anyone knows the goods and bads of having one or the other let me know.

brand wise i would have to say sony and samsung have some really good stuff out right now..

probably 50, yeah there is some good deals on tv right now. seen alot of them at circuit city.

yeah actually now that i think about it i dont want to have to sit in the dark to play games or watch movies/tv. sure i could get the screen bigger, but i dont know. i would have to see a nice projector set up

yeah im in an apartment and that would be useless except for at night. i was only thinking about for when i get a house. but that will be quite a while from now, im going to go look at that tv everyone 2nd'd and 3rd'd.

Got with the LCD.

If you went for the projector and you project it on the wall it will not be that great of a picture. So in that case to get the full potential you would need to get a HI DEF screen which unless you are rolling like that can be pretty expensive.

im not rolling in much, thats why im looking now for when i can afford something in about 3 years. haha ok not really. but my price range is probably 1000-1700. anything higher than that and i will feel incredibly stupid spending that on a tv. might be some peoples thing but not me, i can be happy with good/very good, instead of the best

that tv actually doesnt do 120hz.
and i wouldnt get the led lcd just yet. new technology and they are having problems with it. give it another 2 generations before they work out the kinks there.

I'd say a good projector from Sony would run you at least 5 grand. Better ones could be had for about 6-8 grand. that would be the Mitsu or JVC I believe....

Or you can go for the big boys and spend bout 30 grand....

The sony pearl and black pearl actually seem to get good reviews...these are the 4-5 grand ones...

Good projectors actually have pretty good contrast ratio's, so you could technically still see the screen fine with dim lights like a lamp or so.

It all depends on your space size and the room it is intended for.

I'd say unless you have space to display a 92" screen go with a tv. A nice 50 or 60 inch set would look very good and will prob. be cheaper than a projector and screen, mounting, and money for bulbs.

Also think about convenience. Unless the room is dedicated mostly for home theater, think about the hassle of turning on all your gear (amps, projector) just to watch the news....

if i had a projector it would only be for games and movies so it wouldnt be inconvienent to power alot of stuff up, but spending 5g's to get a decent one isnt on my to-do list. im thinking a 50in 1080p, samsung more than likely. my friend just got a 50inch sony i think and its nice.

if your going to go 1080 it has to be 50"+ for you to even be able to tell the difference

LCD FTW!... but a 50" LCD is going to be ridiculous. if your set on a 50"+ screen and your budget is tight then your going to have to go with a projector but your not going to be able to touch the picture of a physical screen vs a projected image from 8-15 feet. i installed a pretty decent projector at this guys house from about 20 feet away and the picture was pretty good but it had to be fairly dark so you really just have to decide if you want to spend the money for a consistently good and bright smaller picture or turn the lights off and have the option for a 100" screen haha

the 50in my friend got was a 720 or 780p whatever it is, it was about 1300, and the 1080p was only around 1700, that doesnt seem to bad

dont test, this thing could fit like 3, 40 inch flatscreens just behind the screen. haha actually looks like it was a nice tv back in its prime, seen some reviews of people paying around 2 grand for it. i fortunately paid 0 when i got it cause it wasnt working, and paid 0 to fix it, cause after just taking it completely apart, cleaning and turning it on for long periods of times it slowely start workingg

go with a LCD, i was in a theater room today with the top of the line sony projector, klipch 7.1 suround sound, (the dual speaker each speaker, model) and triple subs, WOW it sounded and looked great.. but that system was upwards of 20-25 g's if your on a budget dont settle for a cheap projector, jsut get a LCD for now and save yoru cash

LCD is ****, it pixelates under heavy loads...ever watch a football game on a ****ty LCD hi-def? yeah, theres a blur behind them thats the crappy crystals trying to catch up. the LCD is laggy as hell, and the plasma is right behind it.

if you are going flat panel go for plasma, they dont last as long, but we have lifetime warranty on ours.

and the overall best for gaming, and lag, and screen quality is a projection hi def.


I have no comment on wall projectors, except that if you have the blank wall for one, then go for it!

You talk about ***ty LCD, of course it is gonna look like crap. It will also look like crap on a cheap DLP or a cheap Plasma.

A nice quality plasma will look stunning. So will a nice quality LCD. It comes down to preferences, and cost.

luckily i dont watch sports, will be used for alot of gaming more than likely though. my friends LCD looked pretty clear and wasnt laggy. i dont want something i know ill need a warranty to have it replaced when it goes to sh1t a year or longer later.

I have a Samsung 46in 720P LCD an i love it. I dont do much High Def, but when i do, it looks great. i didnt want to spend the extra $700 on 1080P.

I got mine for $1450 in jUly when it was selling for $1750, i talked them down

Now, Plasma has come along way, and from whati have seen (NOT HEARD) if i had to do it all over again, id go with a Plasma. They have the new tech that doesnt burn images in the screen, etc.

My next TV for my Bedroom will be a Samsung 50in Plasma.

I'd say look at what signal you're feeding them. Since your Plasma is in the main room, it is probably where your HD box is. Any non-hd signal will look like crap on LCD's, even on plasma's.

I have two toshiba lcd's and one Sharp aquos. Both look acceptable with Standard def, but the Sharp looks wonderful in hi-def. no issues when watching games.


It really boils down to preference. Both have strengths and weaknesses. Plasma's have better blacks, LCD's have brighter colors. Plasma's could retain images and dim in time, LCD's can have burned/dead pixels and clouding/banding.

Plasma is an established technology though, but LCD is catching up. The current line of 120hz Samsungs look stunning....

New LCD's are coming out with 120hz refresh rates, which should eliminate a lot of pixel breakup and jittering during fast motion....

i think whenever i do end up getting a tv it will be a LCD. as long as it has pixelshift so nothing gets burnt in the screen, and the non-lagging thing

Pixelshift is for plasmas...not LCD's.

I would honestly recommend a rear-projection DLP set. You wont have issues with burn in...you can get DLP's with LED light engines that will last longer than previous DLP's and overall they are the absolute best type of TV on the market right now.

I own a phillips LCD, a samsung plasma, and a mitsubishi DLP and the DLP kills all of them handsdown in picture quality and the ability to keep up with anything you throw at it

Digital Light Processing. They are the best bang for the buck if you have a place for a thicker screen then next i'd get an LCD before a Plasma...

i have a 42" RCA 720p. it's not the greatest quality i have ever seen, but it's far from the worst. im satisfied with it, and i only paid $1150. it had way more plug ins in the back than i need and came with a 2 year warranty.

kinda old thread, still havent got anything, probably wont. im happy with my 1998 52inch projector haha, as long as i dont see something better i wont want another tv. im still working on getting a factory remote so i can fix the convergence on this tv. its fine for watching shows and all that but when im playing games with small text and anything like that its out of line.
