Development
On February 3, 2005, Creative Artists Agency confirmed that Microsoft had completed a million-dollar deal with Alex Garland to write a screenplay based on the video game series Halo, which would then be offered to studios.[3] Microsoft released Garland's completed screenplay to various Hollywood studios on June 7, 2005, looking to be paid a $10 million fee as well as the studio's agreement to adhere to guidelines set by the game's developers.[4] Microsoft also wanted the studio to seek approval over director and cast. In addition, Microsoft sought full merchandising rights for itself, a minimum $75 million budget, and company representatives' full access to the film's rough cuts in Los Angeles. Studios like Paramount, DreamWorks, Sony, and Warner Bros. did not want to surrender creative rights to the film and passed over the project.[5] A few days later, 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios entered negotiations with Microsoft to divide Halo's distribution rights. The original $10 million deal was reduced based on the studios' negative response to the exorbitant price tag. In the negotiations, Universal gained rights to release the film in North America, where Fox would distribute the film overseas. On August 22, 2005, Microsoft's deal with the studios was announced to be finalized, with summer 2008 as the target release date.[6]
[edit] Screenplay
On July 13, 2006, author D.B. Weiss revealed in an interview that he was writing the screenplay for Halo wars. At the time of the interview, Weiss said that he was working on his second draft of the new script, which contained elements of the project's original screenplay by Alex Garland.[7]
In late October, 2006, Variety magazine reported that screenwriter Josh Olson (A History of Violence) was working on the latest rewrite.[8]
[edit] Pre-production
On October 4, 2005, Bungie Studios announced that director Peter Jackson was signed onto the project as an executive producer.[9] The following year, on August 10, 2006, Universal Pictures announced that Neill Blomkamp was attached to helm the project, where he would make his directorial debut. The Weta Workshop and Weta Digital film effects companies were also announced to be responsible for handling Halo's effects. The film will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand and is slated for a summer 2008 release.[10] To keep the film's producers true to the Halo Universe, Bungie prepared an exhaustive encyclopedia known to some as either the "Halo Compendium" or the "Halo Story Bible", describing nearly every topic in the Halo games and novels including graphics of characters, species and vessels.[11]
[edit] Studio backout
On October 19, 2006, both Universal and Fox studios, who had agreed to co-finance the screen adaptation of the popular Microsoft game, abruptly backed out of the picture, leaving rumors floating that the budget may be rising above the projected $135 million.[12] Microsoft attempted to secure financing from other studios, including Warner Bros. and Paramount, to keep the project moving,[13] but production was officially halted and postponed on October 31, 2006 until additional backing could be found.
On May 21, 2007 Peter Jackson, in an interview with Cinematical.com, said that he expects that the project will get back on its feet once studios "catch a glimpse of the Halo hype first-hand" (with the release of Halo 3).[14]

Halo movie out of turnaround?
Sources: See below.![]()
What we heard: This week, reports began to surface that the Halo movie saga had taken another turn. Over nine months after the Master Chief's first big-screen foray was indefinitely postponed, many underground film outlets began reporting that the project was back on. Among those heralding the would-be blockbuster's return to the production pipeline was Latinoreview.com, which first leaked the first draft of the film's script. (Warning: Script leak contains profanity.)
The reports which did bother listing a source linked back to Variety and/or Hollywood Reporter stories. Those two pieces outlined how movie studio 20th Century Fox had entered into a "strategic partnership" to be the "primary licensor" for the Halo franchise. Since Fox was co-financing the Halo film with Universal and Microsoft, many sites made the logical deduction that the deal meant that production on the project had restarted.
Just one problem--neither article says explicitly that work on the Halo film has resumed. In fact, both merely outline how Fox will expand "the [Halo] brand's licensing and merchandise program" to include more products than the tchochkes currently offered at the Bungie Studios store and the forthcoming McFarlane Toys figurines.
"The addition of the Halo brand is a tremendous addition to our licensing portfolio," Elie Dekel, executive vice president at 20th Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising, told the Reporter. Steve Schreck, Microsoft Game Studios' director of franchise development said the agreement would lay "a solid foundation for the expansion of the property into new products, retail markets and territories."
The official story: With both Hollywood trades not giving any updates on the Halo movie's status, it came as no surprise that Microsoft was itself tight-lipped. "We have no new information to share with respect to a Halo movie," was all a rep would say.
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that pre-production on the Halo movie has officially resumed. Likely that it will, in some form, if Halo 3 meets expectations.

Jackson's Halo Update!
Oscar winner expects "renewed interest" from Hollywood.
by Stax
May 29, 2007 - Although it was dumped by Universal and 20th Century Fox seven months ago, Oscar winner Peter Jackson hasn't given up hope for the film version of the videogame sensation Halo.
The Lord of the Rings helmer, who is attached to exec produce the game-to-film, believes Halo still has a shot at getting made. Stuff.co.nz (via OnFilm magazine) reports that the filmmaker "said he expected renewed interest from Hollywood studios 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures to have Halo made as the Halo 3 videogame will be released later this year."
Jackson and partner Fran Walsh would only remain involved with Halo, however, if Neill Blomkamp still directs it. Jackson said, "We wouldn't want to do it with anybody else. It'll be Neill's call."
