umm, whens the last time you went to a rock show? and i dont mean pussy radio rock or jock rock shit, i mean indie, punk, or hardcore shows
almost every show ive been to has had some type of fighting occur (espec. that dropkick murphys/roger miret and the disasters/casualties show - at least 12 fights that night lol) but i digress
heres just a few of the incidents that have occured at some rock shows over the past years or so:
1) The
Asbury Park Press is reporting that a recent hardcore show at Club Deep ended in tragedy as 25-year old Iraq veteran James C. Morrison was killed. Authorities have reported that along with friends Morrison attended Deep, a club on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, this past Sunday.
According to the County Prosecutor:
[Inside the club, there was a fight,] which at some juncture, proceeded outside. The exact role that Mr. Morrison played in any of this remains under investigation. Police are still working to piece together precisely what happened.
James' mother described the account she received of the night:
They were sitting at the bar and had a couple of drinks. There was something where guys were arguing and, out of the blue, one guy threw a bar stool at my son and hit him in the head. [After leaving the club, ], someone came from behind . . . and hit him in the head
She revealed that Morrison spent several years in the Navy and was stationed on the USS Bataan during the war in Iraq.
A
flyer for the show indicates that Ramallah, Wisdom in Chains, Hard Response and Years Spent Cold were expected to perform. While the incident is still under investigation, bands associated with the concert have
reportedly seen somewhat of an online backlash, resulting in Ramallah's statement that they were not involved and did not actually perform at the show.
2) A number
of sources are reporting about a fatal shooting that took place during the recent Tucson, Arizona stop of the
Street Brutality Tour featuring Shattered Realm, Hoods and Donnybrook.
According to reports, a fight broke out at Skrappy's, a popular alcohol and drug-free all-ages club. Homicide detective Sgt. Mark Fuller told
the Tucson Citizen that the incident spilled outside into the parkling lot where the shooting of a 27-year old took place. Witnesses report that as many as 40 people were involved and others claim the involvement of "hardcore crew" FSU though there is no evidence of this.
No charges have been laid yet, but some Skrappy's patrons fear for the future of the club. The next show scheduled for the club was a stop on
Propagandhi's
Crimean tour and that show looks like it may be moved to a different location.
Eulogy/Hand Of Hope Records, home of Hoods, Shattered Realm and Donnybrook, issued this statement:
All of us at Eulogy/Hand Of Hope would like to send out our condolences to the family and friends of the individual that was killed and anyone else that was injured at the Street Brutality show at Scrappys in Tucson, AZ last night. We hate to see any violence happen at hardcore shows but something of this magnitude is even sadder.
3)
NBC4 is reporting that at least five people died, including the gunman, in a shooting at Columbus nightclub Alrosa Villa on Wednesday night. Among those killed was "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott of heavy metal band
Damageplan (formerly of Pantera), who were just beginning their performance when the attack occured. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The police have released the names of two others who died. They were Nathan Bray and Erin Halk, both audience members. The alleged gunman reportedly shot and killed another at the scene (rumored to be another member of Damageplan) but that person's name has not been released.
Witnesses reported that shortly after 10 PM when the band was playing its first song, a man ran onto the stage and began shooting. After a flood of 911 calls, Columbus police officer James D. Niggemeyer entered the nightclub minutes later and shot and killed the gunman. He was identified by police as Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville.
A number of musicians inspired by Darrell have said a few words about him, and you can click

4) A number of people wrote in about the riots that took place last night at the
British Invasion 2k6 festival in San Bernardino, California. The event featured a number of veteran punk acts including
GBH, the
Adicts,
Total Chaos,
Vice Squad,
Varukers and Broken Bones among others.
Witnesses have cited a disturbance from white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups as having spurred the fights that lead to the riot. The crowd reportedly became agitated when police and fire personnel arrived to respond to the report of a stabbing in the venue. The officers were repelled by the crowd but were later successful in securing the victim. He was brought to Loma Linda University Medical Center. Another man who was hit by a chair was also hospitalized and both are said to be in stable condition.
Police in full riot gear then shut the venue down and herded the 1,500 strong crowd out of the venue into the streets. Law enforcement agencies used tear gas and pepper balls to disperse the crowd, but in the interim two police vehicles parked inside the venue were vandalized, and several people were hurt. Police reinforcements were called in from as far away as Pomona, CA.
The event was organized by
SOS Records and Showcase Presents. It was the third year the event was held at the National Orange Show Events Center in the Orange Pavilion.
