I've been playing bass/guitar/drums for the last 13 years. I've seen Kirk Hammet live. I've also seen Joe Satriani, Alex Lifeson, Fredrik Thordendal, Buckethead, Marty Friedman, and about a thousand other badass guitarists. I can honestly say that Kirk Hammet blows. I have been (and currently am) in bands with better guitarists than him. The dude just isn't that great. I think his solos are boring. They don't have much emotion, and the certainly aren't technically difficult. They're average. ESPECIALLY the garbage he's been writing since ...and Justice For All. Straight up poop.Originally Posted by SPOOLIN
What music have you put out? How many fans do you have and Im pretty sure his bank account will always be greater than yours. Kirk is not the greatest but Metallica has to be one of the top grossing bands.Originally Posted by SpecV_Scott

Yes there are other bad ass guitarist but when you get to the level they are and the amount of time they have been doing it, they are all the same but just do different shit at different times. Some people dissect music way to fucking far and it gets ridiculous.

Both of you completely missed my point. I wasn't saying my ABILITY was anything special. I was just stating my background, to satisfy the previous poster that had mentioned how he thought none of us were musicians and had any idea of what we were talking about.Originally Posted by SPOOLIN
I'm first and foremost a bassist, so you're right...right now I couldn't stand in front of you and play every Kirk Hammet solo. However, if I so desired, I could sit down and learn a majority of them in a couple of hours. I CAN play you most of Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth), which I learned after only having played the bass for six months. But that's besides the point.
My original point was that this whole argument is retarded, because there is no objective way to determine the greatest player. Album sales don't mean shit. Plenty of no-talent hacks sell millions of records. Highest notes-per-minute don't matter either.
What matters is what songs inspire the most in you. When you hear a solo and it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, or it reminds you of some great time in your life....THAT'S what makes it good.
