well, suggestions for motor would fall under 3 categories...

a) sohc vtec
b) dohc ZC. obd1 is 135hp or so out the box, and you can have a whole swap done for $1,000 including the ZC trasmission. or you can use your D serises transmission. this is a great swap if you're on a budget. but one downside, is that the aftermarket performance parts are few and far between.

c) b series... alot of opportunity on the lines of performance, aftermarket parts, etc. if you have the money, b series is the way to go

but, for the full price of a b16 swap, you can have a dohc zc turbo'd if you price it right.
