looking for a lightweight battery?

I've been using a miata battery in my EF for some time now.

While it is a LOT lighter than the honda battery, I have been on the lookout for something even lighter.

I know lots of people go with braille ($100+) or other brands, but I wasn't willing to shell out so much.

After comparing the popular deka lightweight models on specifications, I decided to do my own research.

In an online search, I found a link to this site which has the specs including cca's and weight + decent prices for lots of batteries:

If you buy a battery online, they won't ship it with acid in it. So I got the battery then went to a Batteries Plus store and they filled it for $2.00.

This battery is very light and starts my car better than my Miata battery!

Why not go ahead and get a lawn tractor battery? Weighs in at around 15 pounds, where I believe the stock one is close to 60(?). I've used the AutoZone $20 lawn mower battery in my Neon when I was racing and as it was a DD. Full 800 watt stereo in it as well. Never one problem with it. Later, QD.

Actually your response falls on much smarter ears than you think. If I were looking for an emotional response, then I got it. I made a simple post. If your talking about a honda oddysey, only a fool would buy the specific battery for that machine. Most any ATV, Streetbike, Sportbike battery would fit it.

Just like most of these batteries. The only real limitations on a battery working in your vehicle, is the cranking amps, and whether it'll fit in your car.

My odyssey hasn't let me down. It has 680 CCA too. Weight is 15 pounds, stock battery is 30 pounds. As a bonus, it's a drycell so it doesn't need to be filled and it can't spill. Worth the money in my eyes.

Battery weight (or weight in general) affects all areas of performance: Acceleration (which you aluded to), Braking, and Cornering. The less weight you have on the vehicle, the better it will respond to all three.
So a lighter battery isn't helping my acceleration. No problem there.

My battery was dying anyway - otherwise I wouldn't have spent the $.
This was a purchase of necessity, but I decided to make the most of it.

In relocating the battery for better weight distrubution, and finding a suitable location, a smaller battery cuts down on the space needed. Weight is in direct correlation to size where battery technology is concerned.

IMO: Lighter = Better. (Assuming other compromises need not be met.)

I have a standard stereo system - nothing excessive, so this suits me fine. The price was better than what is available at wal-mart or any local retailer including autozone, etc. The specs were better - and the only place that carries this particular unit is Batteries Plus, but I didn't know that until Luda posted it.

No problem if you can get by with whatever battery you choose. I can tell you that this is the lightest battery I could find with decent specs that will run my car. It also happened to be very cost efficient compared to other batteries which were either heavier or more expensive, not to mention equal or worse specifications.

I bought my battery from the online retailer in my original post. It was purchased at the price listed in my original post.

I thought it was. Don't remember reading it, but for some reason, I was thinking it was. This is why I ask and maybe you can elaborate:

When racing, isn't it best to have plenty of weight on the drive tires for better traction? For an import car, I would think, as light as most imports are, you'd want to keep as much weight on the front end as possible. I understand the opposite side placement for weight distribution, but wouldn't removing weight from the front of the car cause less traction on the drive tires?

yeah i relocated my battery for two reasons:

1. my engine bay is quite packed with the motor swap in there + other additions under the hood.

2. relocating the battery enables me to get the cross-weights closer to where I want them when corner weighting. (drag racers may want more weight up front - but that's not my concern as I focus more on autox and road racing.)

You'll notice that many manufacturers target a 50/50 weight distribution for optimal handling for sports cars. There are packaging and design constraints with a FF honda. That being said, once you are playing with spring rates, you can do a lot to counteract the lack of traction in the front (stiffer springs in the rear ~800lb+ in my case do a lot to improve off the line traction, as do traction bars).

And people may be surprised to learn that replacing your battery with a lighter one (even in the stock location) will actually lighten up your car more than a carbon fiber hood in many cases.

I used some smaller cable ends from walmart or ace hardware

negative is easy

but if you have relocated your battery then you will have to replace the cable ends on the positive cable also anyway
