Default In a EF: NA or turbo? Your opinions

Well i've been boosted for over a year now and I enjoy the hell out of it, but.... I do have tendencies to wonder what a sweet NA build would yeild. No matter what, I have a soft spot for built NA hondas(ITBs ), but boost is definatly exciting. So what are your opinions?

IMO n\a is way bvetter beacuse you allways have the power at your toes

you diont have to get to 4k before you start pulling real hard

I get full boost below 3k And in a NA honda motor you need to rev to the sky to make power

Yeah. I choose my turbo b/c of its size, or lack there of. It won't make gobs of power, but it does come on with the quickness. I'm pretty content with the power im making now, and I know of other NA setups making way more power than me. Just wondering how i'd like the same peak power, but no turbo. You know?

    i see what your saying,
since you have a small turbo you get the quicjk spool and make power lower then 3k like you said wich is nice with n\a i still think your going to have alot more power in your lower rpm ranges so you wont have to downshift everysingle time you wana pass someone or climb up a hill

i dont all that much about ef's but id build n\a way before boost in allmost any car

    haha so not true
nasty NA builds are right at home below 3k - and impress even the most hardcore turbo guy when built right.

    Precision is key with NA

You're taking my responses on two different subjects and construing them together.

    but:

that's the point... you don't want to see full boost in the turns, you'd have understeer issues - and that indeed is not fun. I'm a huge fan of NA, I myself have a decent NA setup in the CRX; and if i were to boost anything it would only be useful to me as a drag car as i enjoy a well balanced vehicle in the turns.

That is a retard statement. What are your grounds? My turbo is ball bearing and spools around 3k and holds throughout the powerband. You have no idea what you are talking about.

    My opinion? Turbo+nitrous=fun

BOV's are just fun love the HKS SSQV on the mazda havent decided on the civic BOV yet.

I think the answer to this question is going to be what engine you are going to go with. If you are going to stay with a d-series i would suggest sticking with the turbo. The N/A builds just dont make enough power. If you are looking to b-series 200whp is pretty easily obtainable and is more than enough. And if your talking big money drop a k-series in and have alot of NA RELIABLE fun.

i think na is much more fun. my 287 whp turbo d series was stupid fast, BUT, it was either your ALL THE WAY IN, or driving with no boost.

if i could do it over again, it would be a 200whp all motor.

I'm the opposite of you. As of right now I want some boOst, been riding around for n/a for too long now and getting tired of it.

I would go with a decent sized turbo also, none of that spool at 2-3K RPM crap. What's wrong with it pulling REAL hard when you hit a certain RPM (say 4-5K)? Because when you drive it daily, keep the RPMs low, the turbo doesn't spool so you can save on gas. But anyway, in all-motor applications the car isn't FAST unless you're in VTEC. So what's the difference with big turbo FI or all-motor N/A then .. except that the turbo setup will pull harder once that RPM is reached.

    Anybody feel me on this?

Just keep you foot outta it I get full spool before 3k, but daily I still get 30 MPG if I stay off it. Just keep the boost gauge in Vac.

    Not necessarily,
for me a hard spool at higher rpm isn't fun when driving in the twisties, you wait for power and then it comes on way to hard causing a lot of under steer. As far as gas mileage, as long as your in vacuum its still using stock-like fuel maps and therefore doesn't change your gas mileage, when my sohc was turbo i actually picked up some gas mileage because i didn't have to down shift to pass and so on

True, the only thing I can think of having a small turbo for is for the twisties (Auto-X etc) because you need a more linear powerband.

Yea, and thats why i run a smaller turbo, my goal is to have a fairly linear output torque wise, especially since i live/drive in the mountains daily

    TURBOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The BOV is the addicting part and the spool, I loved mine when it was turbo'd but it was primered hatch so no one gave it a second look until that PSHHHHH

but an N/A build can be pretty nasty too, but with that come lots of $$$$

If you wanna go N/A jus get a k20, my buddy has a pretty stock k in a rex runnin 12.7 on slicks

But in slow_hatch's situation, hes already putting down more power than he would with a n/a built, the only thing he could pick up would be some throttle response, but he already has very little lag due to a small turbo, so in essence he would be dropping several g's for a small drive ability increase

a LSD and large rear sway bar with a well balanced suspension will eliminate that understeer

ill post better pics this weekend ive had the rex for about a month bought it for 1k running and in great condition, i also added some wheels and suspension, then got tired of the d15 and went d16z6 w/si trans, then added 550cc injectors, turbo and some other goodies for some fun. Its a fun DD and thats all i wanted out of it.

i will get her repainted in february and thats about it
