Well you did ask for it...

Can you argue why you'd rather NOT have VTEC? And I bet you'll retract that turbo statement when you get left in the exhaust fumes.

VTEC = Because EVERYONE'S doing it. Plus it seems to be more expensive. I don't know, I'd just rather brag to have a powerhouse without vtec.

Turbo? I can knock it cuz I haven't tried it. Turbo is one of those things you have to buy it all it once, it seems. Building NA, I can bust the block apart, bore it, ring it, assemble it all back and enjoy it while saving for a head-job. Plus...everyone's doing it. I wanna build a powerhouse without braggin about a turbo.

OK, but going all-motor without VTEC means you're sacrificing streetability for power. HP is always highest above 5252 RPM (through the formula HP=torque X RPM/5252) and cams that are optimized for those speeds are terrible for low speed maneuvers. VTEC allows you to use multiple cam profiles, for different engine speeds. My point is that there are no pro/con arguments for VTEC, it's all pros.

I think you have it backwards... you can't knock it if you haven't tried it. Since you're obviously interested in making big power (like all of us) I'll simplify it: To make more power you have to burn more fuel. To burn more fuel without getting a rich mixture, you have to get more air. Turbos are able to push a lot more air into the cylinders than earth's atmospheric pressure can. On the overall, building an engine all motor gives you a power ceiling of approximately 150 hp per liter. This is because no matter how efficient you make the intake stroke at filling the cylinders, you can't get more air in there than the displacement of the chamber. Truly, there is no replacement for displacement.

With forced induction, you're artificially increasing the volume of the intake charge by compressing it, thus allowing far more fuel without going rich, and far more power. The downside is that physics demands more heat with compression (energy in = energy out), and heat robs efficiency and promotes pre-ignition/detonation. The solution is to cool the air with intercoolers, water injection, etc. The cost of boost vs. N/A is a wash when both are done right, but turbo always makes more power on an equal displacement.

Turbos do have a 'wait time' on the power delivery via the spool-up action, but they're far better suited to daily driving as the low end torque is much improved (where low end = under 5k). All-motor builds inevitably bias the engine toward high-RPM operation, sacrificing low-end output.

Superchargers solve the turbo lag issue, but are limited by the parasitic losses on the drivetrain, and at the top end by the belt drive. Turbos are allowed to spin freely at high RPM (with compressor wheels spinning in excess of 140,000 RPM, giving that signature sound) and are able to push more air where it counts.

Since I'm on the subject, nitrous oxide works by injecting a shit ton of oxygen (since nitrous is two thirds oxygen), which allows more fuel to burn.

So anyway, my opinion is that turbocharging is the best compromise of the available options when you want to make big power for mixed use driving. Now, a highly tuned all motor build, with proper gear ratios matched to a road circuit, is certainly capable of being fastest for that situation vs. the other guys. I just see all motor as being too focused, too many eggs in one basket if you will.

Holy shit that's alot to read, and I"m too tired. I'll read it tomorrow.

One part I skimmed was "big power". Not looking for tremendous amounts. 200whp +/- 20 is my goal. Hell, I'd probably be satisfied with 160 at the wheels.

big power is relative. I don't necessarily mean max power. But in that case, Turbo + nitrous is hard to beat.

I've done lots of research on all motor LS in the past.(I've had my LS motor for over 4 yrs now) And I came to the conclusion that the only thing you get out of building an all motor non vtec motor, is that it is more unique. There is a reason for that though, you spend alot of money for not alot of power. 200HP non vtec is really pushing the limits.(i've seen one or two b20s make this) But for the money you put into it, you could have a mild VTEC build making more power. That is why VTEC is so popular, b/c it works

Hmm...I've got two of 'em...I may build one for LSVTEC...see how it goes...if I don't like it, I'll build the second one, then sell off the LSVTEC when the second motor is done.

I've never been one to drive in a straight line...why would I wanna plan that way? LoL

Yes, LSVTEC was the original plan 2 years ago. May have to resurrect my plans... We'll see. I'll probably sit down and price how much it would be to build each one. Good news is I already ahve a general idea of how to build it since I started it back a while ago...

The plan AFTER I sold the LSVTEC stuff for the LS motor was to put the LS in until the LSVTEC was built and ready...so TECHNICALLY I just never came off the first plan...LoL
