get a licence or be cool about it if he asks. As long as you are lawfully allowed by federal law to possess it, what would you be worried about unless it was a stolen firearm.

What this sounds like is the police officers were trying to get him to calm down. Obviously, they will use excessive force should you resist. If my son committed suicide, I would be hysterical too and would need to be calmed down.

Police officers will restrain if need be. It probably happened on accident and someone is looking for an opportunity to get money in a lawsuit; doesn't mean they are stupid.
