Look at the results from the last nationals. Make a list of cars from the -S, -ST, -SP, or whatever else classes that you like/fit your budget to research and compare.

sohc, or dohc pref the dohc.. you can always throw a dohc head on a sohc.

Or hell even throw a stratus 2.4 in one..for chump change.

The first gen Neon (ACR or R/T if you can get one) is actually a VERY good car.

It also depends on what you want to do to the car. Like a CRX..yeah, it can be a good ST car..but let's say you want to boost it or do other mods that ST might not allow, and you'll quickly be in SSM.

Hop over to www.soloatlanta.com and look through the results lists to see what everyone is using, also go through the rulebook and see what is and is not allowed.

Miata, Mini, etc. Think "nimble" cars, and those are good for AX.

Or, whatever car you get, get it STOCK. Then race at least one full season with it completely STOCK so you can establish your fundamentals. Many mods only hide bad driving techniques and can start bad habits if good ones weren't already in place. Ride or co-drive with experienced drivers and ask as many questions as you can to learn proper habits. When you feel you and your car have about the same limits, buy mods ONE AT A TIME. Learn the new limits of your car and continue this process SLOWLY. Also, be well versed with the rule book so that the mods you do get will allow you to be in a class in which you will still be competitive.

Do not use a swapped Honda because this will put you in SM or SM2, which is a class for people with DEEP pockets, high HP and highly prepped cars.

That makes me laugh, apparently you don't autocross much if you think thats a good car. I'm with everyone else, CRX's are hard to beat and so are the neons. You can do all kinds of things, they both do quite well in ST classes, and they're cheap with good gas mileage.

The sad thing is that or 400whp miata is barely out of SSM, just because of a few small things I removed. And if you do end up building an SSM car you'll have to go pretty far to be competitive even at the ATL events, don't even think about a national event. At Nationals even SP cars are mostly dedicated cars.

believe it or not but i dont know shit about 1st gen neons i just found out a couple of months go they made a 1st gen acr but ya im looking into 1st gen mr2's and neons also some crx's and ef hatches anyone know how the ef sedans do i had one and loved it but had to sell due to finacial issues but anyways the plan with the car is to use it as a dd (but im still keeping the srt) and use it in local or slightly local auto x events so i wont be going national or atleast not for awhile also couple of more questions 1. what would you gurus recomend would do better 2 door or 4 door neon? 2. put these cars in order what you think is best to worst #1 being the best 1st gen mr2, 1st gen neon 4dr or 2dr, ef hatch, crx, eg coupe, eg hatch, miata

I would personally go the same route I've already gone and start with a 4th gen prelude. But it takes someone that's used to a heavy car to learn how to control and maneuver it. My prelude handles great and is decent on gas mileage. I got used to my car street racing and driving it on a daily basis. Loved the first one so much that I bought 2 more after I totaled the first one (Many lessons learned there). It all depends on what exactly you are looking for and what are you doing it for. I honestly go out there to represent for all the other ludes out there by getting my best times and placing as high as possible by the end of the season. But for someone else I'd co-sign with everyone else and say miata, 88-91 crx, 88-91 civic, any mr2, 88-91 prelude(very nimble), & 90-01 Integras. Look for anything light weight in stock trim but comes with a decently powerful motor and "prelude like" suspension.

I can only speak on the neon and its history of being auto X cars, the coupe would be the best suggestion weight wise. The R/t would be a gem to find, but i havent seen one of those in years. Id look for a highline coupe dohc, sohc wouldnt be too bad either like i said before, b/c u can always upgrade. But the Acr was a sure sleeper that slid under the radar back when people were buying kits for hondas...dodge released a race ready neon, with no power options for cheap with koni shocks.

It would be cool to see a built 1st gen, i owned one myself, and a buddy of mine had one, adn was die hard. when i start to see his transform performance wise and with his limited budget, i was impressed. And they are inexpensive to build, compared to the others, and easily available parts to bum from later year neons esp the srt4.
