Default Really, What does it take?

What does it take to build a race car? Not a top end alcohol dragster but one that is competitive, one that would win races but not be so expensive its only done with sponsorships.

20 grand? All-motor, btw, too much **** breaks with high boost. (and yes i know, **** breaks n/a as well)

i guess id need to know a few things....
is a tube chassis front end necessary?
what would be competitive? 10 sec? 11 sec? 8 sec? (1/4 mi)

ill add more as i think of it.

becuse the way the cars are =geared and all the stress and racing puts wear on the engines easy and all u need is for it to crap out during a race then you lose more money by not finishing

in any car it takes money to maintain no matter how u are racing it ive seen cars with brand new $20k engines blow on first runs its sucks unless u have the time and money its a bad idea cause my bro is getting out of it he spend over $100,000 last year just on his car for weekend racing during season

If your friend put 10 grand in the MOTOR of a 5.0 coupe and he's only in the 12s then he needs to SERIOUSLY re-evaluate what he's trying to accomplish.

He should be deep into the 10s, if not 9s. Thats a stupid cheap platform to make fast

Why don't you specify what typing of racing? There's literally dozens of forms of racing automobiles BUT making money at any form of racing is next to impossible until you're in the big leagues with top sponsors. One you add in entrance fees, tow vehicle & operating costs, the car itself, tires, fuel, etc. then look at the winnings you'll see there is no profit.

Once you decide what you want to race, whether it's drag, road course, circle track or whatever then you need to get the rule books on all the differant classes and build the car from there.

If you want drag and do bracket racing then you don't need the fastest car, you want a consistant car.

I think you should talk to someone who actually has what you are talking about. Not just hearsay. All motor is probably more expensive than turbo. To be competitive in a sanctioned series in an all motor class you are going to need AT LEAST 280-300whp. As of now there is only a street tire class in sportsman racing. Pro, you will need $50k or more. Professionally built racing engines dont blow up on the 1st pass, bad tuning or a mis-shift blows a car up on the 1st pass.
Prostock was a low 12 second class and that on street radials not slicks.
SFWD/TS is a turbo sportsman class that runs low 9's and slower. But sfwd guys have anywhere from $10k-$50k in a car.
For $20k you should be able to build a very solid race car that looks good and has tons of parts to make it go fast. But its up to YOU to make it fast.

if you want to be "competitive" look at NDRA / NHRA websites and take a look at the qualifying and elmination rounds for the class that you want to race in if its drag racing.

from there on, you try to make as much power as you can with the money you have and get crap load of seat time to make it work. Car can make all the power in the world if you cant drive it you WON'T be competitive.

To make a fortune racing you have to start with an even larger fortune
