That's part of the reason. The other part is that he is running CTRs - he won't be starved for power where he'll need a "trick" head. Also a lot of people have gotten their feelings hurt running an 81.5mm block with a 84mm head - the gaskets usually fail much sooner.

ah ha, i like knowing the complete picture. And you're absolutely correct about the head gasket failing sooner - partially due to a small part of it being exposed in the combustion chamber.
