Plenty of everyone drives everything, it take all kinds.

Shit look at me, I've had WRX, MazdaSpeed6, SI, VW mk3/4/5, supras, tacoma but i'm really a VW guy at heart.

Side note: Looked at a 1991 Gallant VR-4 today for $1200 as a winter beater. Has 179k on it but comes with a few upgrades. It is painted the Stealth purpley grey.

Well I just got done installing the exhaust (firewall to bumper) on my red hatch in the dark cold rain, crawling in the grass, so that I can take it to the exhaust shop in the morning. Gladly the car was already on ramps in the front.

I will never do it again.

so today my car overheated like crazy and i checked my radiator and it was bone dry and this has happened twice about once every month

should i just add water and run my fan all the time? its hardwired to a switch so i usually never turn it on. is this the reason it overheats or is it something worse like a blown head gasket

here wego diagnosin a car via intraweb again. lol

ok- simple first, then think worst case scenario stuff. u may have a leak, fill up ur radiator, get all the air out. check for cracked/damaged hoses.

also need a lil more info. is the fan cutting on at all? dont rig itto run all the time- that works but its just a bandaide to whatever is really messed up

could be:
fan not working ( sensor on the thermostat housing or the fan itself)
thermostat is screwed up
bad hose, ect


if u rcar isnt smoking, its prob not thehead gasket. lol

btw- what car and what engine is it?

Rich is right, don't band-aid the issue.

1) check your plugs, if they're bleached white - that's where your water is going. If it's just a small amount, it typically won't noticeably smoke.

2) the copper seal stuff (comes in the bottle at Advance) does work for issues like this if done exactly as the directions say.

3) Again, like Rich said, double and triple check your hoses.

4) Don't ghetto rig your car, that doesn't fix anything.

i bought it like that i dont know how to pin the fan to the fusebox or whatever so its just a switch in my car i usually only turn it on when i am sitting for a long time or driving for a while.

and i will check all the hoses and stuff and no it doesnt smoke
also its a sohc zc

yay, it already has a bandaide but its ok, its a cool one. lol.... that switch is not a good idea at all. who knows what its wire into.

u are goin to have more problems with it, check the slark plugs like jon said. u can even go as far as taking the VC off and looking under it. white milky stuff= headgasket. but like i said, easy stuff first. lol..

got a picture of the engine bay? wire tuck? ect...

You can just check on the bottome of the oil cap, instead of removing the entire valve cover.

lol slark. I would suggest the rad cap too, but I dunno with the depreciation of coolant. Bummer tho, pressure test if anyone has a buddy at a garage ( *ahem* PK )

i guess you have to have a certain number of rep points (which i think are gauged by your activities on the site?) before you can do certain things.

just an educated guess - i guess i was grandfathered in when they changed things around here.

man i hope its nothing bad
im just going to assume/check and say its the radiator leaking. Also the fan is hooked up like anything else ghetto just straight to the battery and to a switch i believe.

Im pretty sure its just the radiator cause it never gets close to hot and has only over heated 2 times and both were when the radiator was completely dry. Also once i let it cool down and fill up the radiator it is good again untill i guess the next time it goes empty.
