made a bit of progress today. finally got around to pulling the T56 off and found out it already has a decent clutch on it. still has a good bit of life in it, but i want to use my light flywheel and SPEC clutch i picked up so out it comes.

got the subframe hacked up nicely today, cut the stock mounting humps off and welded certain areas to keep them solid. i'll eventually plate over the parts i cut off but i want to get the motor over the subframe to see where the mounts line up and such. notched it between the rack mounts as well to clear the front portion of the oil pan.... need to see how much more i can notch out to let the motor sit down. my method for checking basic clearances was to bolt the oilpan to the bellhousing and start beating the shit out of the trans tunnel.

as you can see there was a little work with a hammer, and i'm sure more to come.

He's not looking for times...he's a drifter I could be wrong, but he does drift demo's with us at NOPI and it's hard to keep the tubo cars cool for 30 mins while we beat the hell out of them. Dand and I were tossing around this idea. It still may happen.

Looking good Erin. We should know wed if we got the nats

He drifts....extremely well might I add. Dunno if he will drive it in a straight line.

You are a fucking psycho path, Erin. How bad is that monstrosity going to throw off your weight distribution? I know LS1s are supposed to be quite light for a V8, but still.....

Keep us posted. I can't wait to see it done.

Funny i was thinking the same EXACT thing...Im almost sure the ls1 outweighs the sr20det by atleast 100lbs but being v8 you dont have to worry about hitting boost to get the tires spinning.....all that torque should do that for ya....

nice swap though...you should supercharge that beast.....

actually, most of the extra weight from the swap is in the T56 trans, not so much in the motor setup so the weight is down low in the middle of the car. the T56 is straight beefy compared to the nissan transmission. the SR with turbo setup and such probably only weighs slightly less than the LS1 alone, although i don't have any scales around that go that high to find out. my goal is to get the motor as low and far back as possible, within reason of course. started some mounts tonight in the short time i had to work on it, i'll get pictures up shortly.

as for the question about times, i'm not building it as a drag car but i'm sure it'll see the strip at some point.... should be a pretty quick car even with the stock LS1 in it.

ok tonight's slight progress. got started on the engine mount locations for building my custom mounts. these are 1/4" steel plate, and will be gusseted on the bottom to resist flexing down from the weight.

a shot of the subframe notch for oilpan clearance. i might need to take a little more out but i'm not messing with that until i see how far back the motor can really go before it hits everything.

last thing i did tonight was install the new throwout bearing on the slave cylinder. i went to install it back onto the tranny and sure enough, one of the bolts stripped the hole so i need to drill/tap the hole one size larger. not a big deal, just didn't get around to it this evening. these GM slaves are pretty neat little setups and don't weigh anything compared to a standard slave/arm setup.

yea, for those wondering, the LS1/T56 is actually about 130 lbs lighter than a stock KA/auto tranny, and even though a SR/5-speed is also lighter than that, the weight won't be thrown off by much. this swap is gonna be straight up awesome, and i still wanna steal your car erin (after it's done of course) .

Hay you know Hinson super cars sells mounts and all the supporting hard ware for ls1 swap. Been thinking about this swap since sport compact did an article on it. Good luck on the swap should be a beast when finished

Apparently the Hinson kit is just some plates you have to weld yourself so its not worth the money. But they do offer some nice bits for the swap like new clutch lines.

hinson's stuff doesn't fit all that well and it's not hard to do this stuff as long as you can cut/weld.

tonight was good, progress was had.

got the motor in the car and after many pulls and several proper beatings to the trans tunnel we got it sitting where i wanted it.

at first i thought the hood wouldn't fit, but after sitting the stock silvia hood on there all i'll have to do is cut one rib out of the bottom and i'm golden . unfortunately, the awesome carbon hood i just bought has to go .

That CF hood is hot, you could always graft a URAS vent on the stock one.

    Great swap.

I considered this myself but decided to stay nissan. One question though, you said you were using a SPEC clutch? I wouldn't advise that if you haven't bought it yet. I have had bad experiences with those and know of a lot of others that have to.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product and see you at Nopi!

the LS1 guys have had good success with them. mike peters runs a spec in his 600+hp LS1 240 drift car and it's held up well to the abuse of his car... it'll be ok in mine.

i'm really looking forward to driving the car . tomorrow i'll be working on it all day so i should have some more progress pics up tomorrow.

    the progress for today:
built the engine side mounts, used the inner portion of the stock "clamshell" that used to hold the rubber mount and used 3/16" plate to build the rest. just doing hotrod style solid mounts.

picture of shifter alignment, the shifter will be close to centered in the stock hole but just about a half inch foreward. the cool thing about the T56 is that i can make my own shifter so i'll just make an S-bend shifter if the reach on it sucks.

and i have to give a huge thanks to my friend Nick (spyder on here) for busting out his skills and making me a cluster with my gauges. we'll clean the appearance up later, but it's kickass and functional (and better than anything i could've made in an afternoon).

final mounting will be done tuesday when i'm off work. i'll finish up the bottom mounts and do the trans mount.

Nice Erin, I can't wait to see it when your done. Oh yeah, I saw you in the Oct issue of Drifting mag. ( not sure how I ended up with a subsciption) It's the one with the yellow AEM 350z on the cover. They interviewed Dan and Tracy in it. So you may already know what I'm talking about.

today's fun... everything is mounted solidly now

    today's stuff....

made a throttle cable bracket to use the stock cable, as with most of my stuff it isn't pretty but it'll work.

bolted up the motor side of the mounts to start working on the bottom mounts

started just welding everything i could find to make lower mounts, in the end they aren't half bad.

how they look in and together

    shifter alignment in the car

finally finished the trans mount, it will be cleaned up with the excess steel cut off and some extra bracing done but it works as-is

    and the hotness shot

there's still a ton of work to do, but the hardest is done.
