I'm thinking it was some sort of test mule, for what became the layout of all FWD cars today. Wasn't Mini the first to put the engine transversely?
It was a test mule. For Speed.
But the first transverse setups were long before the mini.
edit...it was not a mule for any front wheel drive development.
I'll give a hint. The front wheels are locked and cannot steer. The rear wheels steer it. Another car would be created from this experiment.
Final Hint.
What is the fastest rear wheel steering car in history?
I was going to say it was the mule for 4 wheel steering, but I guess not from that last hint.
hell i dont know the anwser , but i am sure am glad to see you posting again , how have you been?
Thanks bud. Just busy with school.
How are things for you?
What i was getting at.....
This Mini testbed was to prove the rear wheel steering concept for the fastest car in history.
The Thrust SSC
Thrust SSC weighed 10 tons and had to have huge metal front wheels which were going to be impossible to steer. So a rear wheel steering system had to be developed. It was a very controversial idea so wheel and brake designer Glynne Bowsher built the Mini to prove the concept to the man in charge of the project; Richard Noble. Note there was never a tire. Any tire would have disintegrated at a fraction of the speed Thrust SSC reached.
Thrust SSC's front wheels.
and Rear wheels (steering wheels)

dammit, I was on the right track. The thrust came up when I google'd rear wheel steering, but I didnt click it, lol.
What was it's top speed?

I had to research some on this beauty. Finally a good use for the Mini, besides cheesy Wahlberg movies.
