I miss pop-up headlamps...I think the C5 Corvette was the last car to have them.

Yeah, I don't know why they're gone. I don't think they'll ever comeback, but I don't see why automotive companies wouldn't try. I mean, there are a good chunk of people who like them. I love the streamlined look when down, and the creative "coming alive" feel as they open up. I know you posted in the thread I'm about to link to, but this is for others in the thread to see.
Cars with interesting Headlights, Import Atlanta Thread
(a bunch of cool headlights in that thread, some pics, mostly videos of really cool opening mechancisms)
^^ Yeah, I drew a frame of a man running on each fan blade. That is him running at idle
They've lost their relevance. The motors are heavy, and now lighting technology and designs allow for much smaller housings so the need to conceal the lights is gone. It also has something to do with the European pedestrian collision safety regulations. Flip up lights can do some damage if you roll over them. You're right though, it adds a great deal of character to a car's design. The next big thing is LED headlights though so I'm wondering how innovative designers are going to get with those.
