    Default MK2 GTI build thread

Just recently bought me a 1985 mk2 GTI. Always wanted one so I finally got it. It'll be my project car for now and possibly turn into my daily driver but I'm not sure. Got it for cheap so I couldn't refuse. Runs GREAT!

On to the picture: (this is how it looked when I first got it)

The little white cable coming out of the grill is how I open the hood (ghetto status)

    Currents plans:
    - Re-do interior
    - Fix all the exterior stuff
    - Drop (Raceland Coilovers)
    - Paint (black)
    - Get some BBS'

That's it for now, if anyone has any suggestions, let me know
And also, if anyone's got some extra mk2 gti parts layin around that they wanna get rid of, let me know.

    Edit:
Interior is currently gutted, took out everything, washed the carpet and getting ready to spray it with black fabric paint to give a new-ish look, just waiting for it to dry. Might keep the gutted look with just half the carpet and the front seats but not sure yet. Will post before and after shots of the carpet tomorrow when it's done.

I just got it lol. I'm already working on it, which is why this is a build thread and not a photo shoot.

Lol google anything that has to do with vw and vwvortex will come up. Te website is www.racelandus.com but I don't think they currently have them for the mk2, keep checking though. But I'm pretty sure you can get Raceland Coilovers on ebay for an mk2.

Do you say it the right way "mark two," or you you pronounce the letters "emm kay". I'm only going to lay this out once for IA, so here goes.

These are pronounced as "Mark" (as in the British usage)

    Mark One

    Mark Two

VW stopped making real cars in 1993 so you can pronounce the model designations of their later transportation appliances any way you want.

Lol I know how it's pronounced, although it's much easier to type to letters instead of four and I don't say mk2 or mark2. I just say GTI, no one ever asks which one, they usually ask what year. And yeah you're right about them making the real cars until 1993 lolol.

    Stuff done today:
    - took out almost whole interior
    - cleaned/shampooed and painted carpet (looks MUCH better in person)
    - cleaned and painted interior metal (will get pictures tomorrow)
    - took off front grill and headlights (need new ones)
    - took out the unnecessary wires (about ten of them)
    - cleaned all the other interior pieces except the seats
    - and got some fresh decals in the mail today (these are the only two going on the windshield, and then the importatlanta sticker is going on the rear side window).

This is how it looked when I first took it out of the car:

    Cleaned, getting ready for paint:

Paint is done: (had to cover the plastics because I used a different paint for them)

Interior: (looks much better now since it's been cleaned and spray painted black, floors only)

Headliner: (I need a new headliner all together, where can I get it at? This one is all cracked)

Seats: (not cleaned, what if I painted them black as well like the carpet? I'm kind of scared of the paint sticking onto my clothes, although it is paint made just for fabrics like that)

Gauge Cluster: (I want a more modern looking one, what others will fit in there?)

Here's some stuff I've done over the past 2 days (not much because I had to worry about why my car wasn't starting).

    Started on the paint:

    Took out the headliner:

Carpet is installed (now ready for the rest of the interior:

Here's a engine shot (haven't done one yet):

The wheels (they're being refinished and being put back on):

Here's some wires that I don't know where they belong (if anyone could help me that would be great):

The one above is connected to this blue connecter here:

    That's it for now.
