    Default Porsche 939. No really!!!

So this past weekend at the Ferrari challenge, Atlblkz06 got to talking about a Porsche 939. He said it exists and i said i did not think so. I thought he was reffering to a 959. Well, i was wrong. A 939 does exist. Not exactly a factory Porsche but a weird story nontheless. It answers a question that only the 80's would have asked.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ever wondered what you would you get when crossing the Porsche 911 with the 928? Well, in 1983 Rinspeed did an attempt to cook something from this receipt.

What Rinspeed wanted to do was to make a Porsche 911 Cabrio in Turbo configuration. At the time, in 1983, Porsche didn’t produce a 911 Turbo Convertible. To do this Rinspeed took a regular 911 Cabrio and reinforced the car so it could cope with the extra engine-muscle. While they were at it they also added the exterior modifications that make the car so different from a standard 911. The mods included a completely new flat nose to resemble that of a Porsche 928. The tail section is also 928-like, including the tail-lights. The front bumper is a Rinspeed piece. Customers could choose whether they wanted these new parts in Kevlar of Carbonfiber.

This crossbreeding resulted in a crossbreeded name: Rinspeed 939. The name of the Rinspeed 939 was derived from the simple calculation 911 + (9)28 = 939. The name was later changed in R39 because Porsche had already bought the 939 name and so Rinspeed was no longer able to use it.

Interiors could be made according to the customers wishes (what else is new?). Many of the Rinspeed 939s were fitted with Recaro seats all in full leather and of course a high-end hifi-system was installed (Clarion G80).

The Porsche Turbo-engine was left almost untouched by Rinspeed. However, because of the many plastic that replaced the original metal, the car was much lighter than a regular 911 Turbo…about 400kg lighter. Lighter, with the same power means much faster. 0 – 100km/h in under 5 seconds and a top speed of 275 km/h.

The car in the first pictures is the prototype that was unveiled at the 1983 Geneva Motorshow. The actual production 939 had some minor changes like the position of the air ducts in front of the rear wheels, in stead of on top of the rear fender.

Negative. Porsche DID NOT produce a 939 therefore there is no Porsche 939. Rinspeed, a Swedish auto builder and design company, used 928 body parts on it calling it a 939...911 + [9]28 = 939. Porsche then trademarked the 939 name forcing Rinspeed to change the name to R39. I'd be curious to see a title or run the VIN on the "939"...bet it would come back as a 911.

Congratulations for posting the ugliest modified Porsche in existance lol! Porsche already made the 911 fugly by offering a slantnose and Rinspeed took it a step further. People put the "i" head on the BMW 325e making it a 2.7 liter stroker...does that mean there are truly BMW 327i's roaming around?

With technicalities considered, I realize this is not a true Porsche as i wrote in the very first part of the post. This line made me wonder though on what could have been, "The name was later changed in R39 because Porsche had already bought the 939 name and so Rinspeed was no longer able to use it."

Again, this all came from a Sunday argument that had a strange and unexpected conclusion.

Anyone can stencil a number on a car or put a badge on it calling it something it's not.

How? That the slant nose is the ugliest Porsche ever produced (911, 930, & 935) or my facts that a Porsche 939 technically does not exist?

Well its a bastard child of automotive curiosity and creativity, but I think saying "There is a Porsche 939" is not quite true. But whatever it is, and whoever made it - there is a 939 sorta made by Porsche in parts lol

I was just wondering about your view on the aesthetics. I must admit we sit on a fork in the road relative to seeing the slant nose cars.

    Different strokes for different folks.
