wow that sucks
im guessing it was an electrical problem that started the fire?
weak civic
I don't really know... it happened a long time ago... and I saw a couple burnt cars today so it just reminded me... it's not just aircooled VW's... I have seen brand new BMW's, Audi's, new VW's, Honda's etc do it... a fire extinguisher is cheap insurance...
It started behind my fan shroud, but the only thing over on that side is the starter... so who knows... i had just cleaned out my car and my extinguisher wasn't in it... I won't leave home without one anymore... it was an expensive lesson to learn![]()
So just in case you guys hadn't thought about it I wanted to throw that suggestion out there to you... you never know... a week later i was driving home and i stopped to help a girl that had a new beetle that was on fire (while her and the two guys that stopped to help her just kinda watched it burn)... in her case it didn't put it out... but it cant hurt to try and if you hit it when it starts it will probably put it out
I hate to see a clean Beetle go down like that .
Damn, that really sucks.

It was an autostick too... and all my friggin tools that were in it got all nasty too... there is a pic somewhere of my melted timing light... the lens had somewhat survived lol
I still use some of my burnt up tools actually... car fires smell gross
i have/had but now its expired supposedly...
the old bugs are notorious for catching on fire, Sorry Bro.

i wouldn't have left home with the bug..in the first place.
A lot of people put the gas filter after the fan shroud right before the carb. The lines get old spring a leak and dowse the ign. coil and boom, rolling fireball. The best place for the filter is to lift the gas tank and put it there.
That is what a 1971?

Just don't mount it to the a-pillar like every idiot and their kitchen extinguisher. The mount wouldn't even hold up in a 5mph crash much less a serious accident lol!Originally Posted by VWGirl
hmm... and all this time I just thought fire extinguishers were for guys like Paul Walker.
oh, wow, that really sucks.
that car looked really nice.
i had a fire in my car due to letting someone else put a CD player in my car. cabin filled with smoke in like 5 secs. i was lucky i just happen to have the fire extinguisher in my that i just happened to be taking to my buddy's that he had shipped to my house so his lady wouldn't bitch about him buying "stupid shit".
i saved my car though, and only messed up my dash a little bit. nothing serious.
that sucks ass!!!
it's a 74 so no horsehair... they switched to foam injection in 74 (though i swear they still smell like the horse hair) and the fuel filter is okay in the engine bay so long as it is not on the pressure side of the pump... who uses leaky fuel filters?
was just a suggestion based... thought pics might put it in to perspective... this tore me up for days when it happened... i was heart broken FOR A LONG TIME! I gave away the car and I think it became a dune buggy
fire does interesting things to the metal... this became garage art

was this on 675 about a month ago?

A long time ago a saw a video of a VW golf catch fire and the drive and passenger Just watched it burn until the fire department got there. Since then I have a ABC fire extinguisher in every car I've owned.
I've had to use it too. cheap insurgence for sure saved my car.
we watched years ago one of the guys we raced with drive by two corner workers shaking a fire extinguisher at him as he drove his golf of fire.
He did not know it when he went by the first one, then the second. He realized it and then it was too late.
The car had just been fully built it was on its first shake down lap.
"x" many thousand dollars down the drain.
wow thaT sucks... it was a very clean car indeed!
Greasy VW with not enough ventilation. Those were known for fires, so were fiero's
