    Default Mercedes 1930 SSK

ok so another thread in car talk just made me come out with my obsession with this car. Absolutely beautiful. The first car that comes to mind from that era..Something about that body and the way the metal flows. I cant tell how how beautiful this car is to me

1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK Count Trossi Sports 2-Seater Owner: Ralph Lauren

Winner of the 1993 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Best of Show

The car and many others from Ralph's collection were featured in a great film documentary by Discovery HD. It went into the full history of the car and is also narrated by my motorsport historian hero Doug Nye.

Click Here for the trailer. Speed Style and Beauty Ralph Lauren's car collection.

Check Discovery channel link on the SSK and a few others from Ralph's 29 masterpieces

    Its story...

The SSK represented a metaphor for the Roaring Twenties and was the most widely copied car of its generation. Of the 30 or so SSK models produced by Mercedes-Benz, this one is unique. The coachwork was designed by its original owner, Count Carlo Felice Trossi, who drew the sketch from which a British coachbuilder made the car a reality. Trossi was a successful racer once involved with Enzo Ferrari’s stable of drivers, but began driving Mercedes in the 1920s. The lines of this SSK are particularly voluptuous, with its bold and highly polished radiator grille and its long hood enveloping more than half the body. Crested pontoon fenders are mated to an extended body that carries the line of function to a rakish V-shaped windshield. Echoing the sweep of the fenders is a gracefully tapered tail, while three great exhaust pipes emerging from the side of the hood serve to vigorously punctuate the overall effect. Other clever touches include the sculpted panel between the frame horns, the styling of the Mercedes three-pointed star into the panel, and the jaunty rear wheel spats.

    Its ownership history....

    Year Owner
1930 Chassis sent to Tokyo sales agent in February, returned to the factory in September. October sent to Mercedes-Benz sales agent Carlo Saporiti in Milan
1932 Count Carlo Felice Trossi, Italy, as a chassis. Coachwork privately commissioned to his own design. Resold/exchanged with friends several times in Italy.
    1950 Ricardo Polledo, Argentina
    1952 Charlie Stitch, USA
    1954 Carter Schaub, USA
    1963 Raymond Jones, USA
    1975 Anthony Bamford, UK
    1980 Thomas Perkins, USA
    1988 Ralph Lauren

Great picture this is. You can see Paul Russell in the drivers seat. He is from Paul Russell and Company . They have been responsible for many of Ralph Lauren's restorations.
