I would say the opposite. Car and Driver named the best handling car at any price the E36 M3. Maybe a bit of a stretch but the article says it won because how easy it was to drive fast and it is forgiving.

If you go out, floor it in 2nd and shift at redline mid corner well even the M3 is not going to help you there.
Over confidence is def. true but it's also the simple fact that the cars limits are SO high even in today standards and when you cross them with little experience (which you have to be moving to do) you are probably going to end up in a wall. The E30 and even E46 are just more forgiving and playful if you ask me from my experiences with them
I believe Road And Track tested a Dinan M3 with shocks/springs/wheels and it slalom'd around 72.5 MPH and managed around 1g on the skidpad. Yes it was modified but those cheap parts get you Enzo like handling numbers on paper. That's amazing!
I'd also say some good clutch worth will easily get you around a corner, shifting at red line. Not saying do it, but i've been in the situation and it's simply a case of one not knowing how to shift mid-corner that'll put you in a ditch
