His stock diff won't handle more than about 300tq - if he babies it. He will have to upgrade it.

8K won't get you very far. Look to put in either a SBC, SBF, or 13BT/13B-REW.
Once you get the motor in, and running, you can look at upgrading the setup. Pay attention to the cost of the EMS and fuel system, as well as the tranny, and diff. These things add up quickly. You should probably look at buying an older race car, and swapping the parts over into yours.

A 20B would run you about $17K to do it right.
