Never understood the appeal of a car that looks like it was 1/4 or 1/2 done with restoration. Some looked like they just rolled out of the junkyard. To each their own I guess. At least there were a handful of cars in there with clean paint and what-not.

it's not about whether or not the car is "pretty" so to say... The basis of rat rodding is: you, a steering wheel, and the open road with nothing but raw power under your right foot. No AC, no cupholders, no comfy leather seats... It's pretty much like riding a rigid chopper with 4 wheels.

So...would the RB20DET powered 1972 Datsun I had be considered a "rat rod"? No A/C, no P/S, no interior crap. Just an engine, a seat, steering wheel, and a dash with guages.

No. That's just a stripped down datsun. That's like stripping the interior out of a newer model mustang, painting it flat black, and saying "well, it must be a rat rod". There's not a blanket definition of what a rat rod is. But i'm sure you're a smart enough guy to know that a datsun isn't a traditional hot rod.

Cool to see some real Rat Rods instead of 240's and Civics painted in primer/flat black.

I think by definition rat rods have to be pre WWII American cars.

There are exceptions allowed for imported cars that would have been in America before WWII or right after in the early '50's like Bantams, Fiat Topolinos, VW Beetles, MG's, etc.

Gassers are awesome. I almost want to do a straight axle on my '62 Ford

Not really... these cars were meant to look like that. There was probably more fabrication talent at that one show than there is on the entire IA forum. Just because it isn't shiny and new looking doesn't mean it didn't take skill to build

Theres a big difference between cutting the springs on a civic v/s channeling a '32 Ford body onto '29 rails. Also, a lot of the cars there are probably more driveable than most of the "tuner" cars I see on here

Most of the guys who build cars like these aren't necessarily rednecks. These guys are more about bitchin' sideburns and PBR than mullets and Miller Lite.

If you really want to see the hardcore rednecks, go to a 3rd. gen Camaro or Fox Mustang show
