PS, Spike is doing one of the power block shows where they are currently building a rat rod.
Ehhh... i've seen Hot Rod TV's version of what they call a "rat rod". To them (and most people), any unpainted or flat black car is a rat rod. However, they put billet and sh*t all over the car. All the rustbuckets (not counting the Kustom mercs, etc) i've posted are true rat rods. Those idiots from Hot Rod TV are just posing.Originally Posted by Deke
so what exactly constitutes a rat-rod?
A rat rod is a nostalgic hot rod or custom built with the bare minimum needed to function ie no radio no air conditioning no power accessories ect. It's built for the owners tastes and no one else's. (That being said it does not mean built unsafe or unreliable lol)Originally Posted by .93lude
edit: but keep in mind that's not the "official" definition. Everybody's got their own ideas on what they are. One of the main things is that back in the day (50's, 60's) the guys who built the original traditional hot rods didn't have a ton of money do drop on catalog parts... most of their stuff was hand made by them in their garages. Their cars were stripped down to the bare essentials, lean and mean -- what you see is what you get basically, with a minimum of store-bought parts... unlike all the shop-built $100,000 billet aluminum-mobiles where the owner sends it to the shop and doesn't see it until it's ready to drive and all the work's done for him.
