and we're one of the few countries in the world that frowns upon being billingual....

I don't think we frown upon being bilingual. We frown upon not making the effort to learn English in an English speaking country.

God forbid you have to learn something new that may serve a purpose one day....

Same goes for those that come to this country and don't make an effort to learn the language of this country.

I learned a bit about this in a linguistics intro course (that makes me a fucking expert on this subject, of course) and there are some obstacles to learning a second language in another country, for example, learning a new language while working, let's say, a labor job (which requires minimal language), is hard.
