i've looked into/tried doing stuff like that but it's pretty complex. a lot of people use 3d programs for part of it and then just crazy amounts of layers and stuff like that in photoshop. the stuff i've tried hasn't been nearly as elaborate or good looking, but was still amusing to try (i pretty much just found some kind of base image and then put tons of layers on top of it with all kinds of shapes and a little text). my friend andy sapp is quite good at stuff like that though and posts a bit of his work up on our board (driftmechaniks.com) so you might could hit him up for advice over there.
