Default New car - 1991 Honda Beat

Well, my 1990 Civic Sedan got wrecked at the beginning of this month, so I bought another car...a 1991 Honda Beat! Original paint, slightly over 50K miles, runs great, a blast to drive...I love it.

    No, it's not CDN, it's JDM y0!

I paid $7,500 for it. Brian, I think the AZ-1's are going to be over $10K, haha, but that would be sweet if you got one.

I'm going to try really hard to be at the V on the first Thursday in March with the Beat.

I just washed it and took some pictures with the top down:

Yeah, I added some pictures to GT Auto Enthusiasts group on Facebook or some group like that...also I Love My Honda (I'm the mod on that group).

I will have it at the GT Auto show. See you there!

Yes, swaps will fit with some encouragement - the guy I bought it from is prototyping a B-series swap kit. I, however, do NOT want to swap this car, as it's a joy to drive as it is, and swapping in a huge B-series motor kind of hacks the car up. There is lots of aftermarket support for this car, however, it's all Japanese. There is a turbo kit available, but again, I'm not interested in doing that - the car is perfect as is in my opinion. I may eventually want to get the Mugen hard top for it...it's a very nice piece.

Back Yard Special sold their beat on USA eBay a few weeks back, something like $32,000 with a B18C swap and all the BYS goodies they made for the car.

    E07A - 656cc inline 3-cylinder, SOHC, 12-valve engine, MPFI, ITB's. It's mid engine RWD. It makes 64 bhp @ 8,100 RPM and weighs 1670 lb.

Yeah... slower than a miata if you're trying to DRAG RACE. But faster on a mountain pass or twisty back road. I'm surprised not alot of us know about the Beat, or City, or Ascot, Edix, Elysion, Concerto, Saber, Today, Torneo, Vigor, Rafaga, and Logo.

Yep... all those cars are Hondas. Most never made it to the states, or came under the guise of another car. There's alot of Honda cars out there.

I didn't buy this car so that I could be faster than a Miata.

Plus 64 bhp @ 656cc = 98 specific bhp - that's more than a B18C1. I'm very happy with the car the way it is.

Your reason for why they didnt make it to your U.S. is completely subjective. Never said or thought I knew it all. I just know a little about Honda's motor vehicle history and other Japanese "things".

There's really no need to call me a jackass just because I said you were wrong. In retrospect, perhaps my comments were subjective as well. But when you really think about it, they're factual. I didnt call them "cool" luxury cars or "fast/big" mini-vans/coupes. I try to stay clear of adjectives when talking about stuff I dont know everything about.

To save face and prevent this guys nice thread from becoming a pissing match I might as well just yield and say yeah... Julio's right... they're mostly ugly and the reason why the didnt come to US soil is because they're crappy or whatever else. But if you think about it, why, up until now, has the Skyline, TVR or Garaiya never seen U.S. soil at a mass produced/publicly retail level? The answer lies in the same reason why other Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans, Suzuki's, etc, never made it to the US soil past or present.

And for a side note... I love cars... not just Honda. look at the history of all my posts... I've never bashed a single car for its factory made splendor. I'm not an opinionated person.

    I digress.

Personally, the reason *I* believe the Beat wasn't brought to the USA is because it filled a particular niche in Japan - it's a Kei car - a car designed to have small physical dimensions, have 64 bhp or less, and have an engine displacement below 660cc (like the Suzuki Cappuccino and the Autozam AZ-1). These cars exploited a loophole in Japanese law that allowed them to be parked on streets - see what I mean? This car was designed FOR inner city Japanese commuters.

I have always wanted one because it's a mid-rear Honda, and I can't afford an NSX, and because of it's rarity. Also, if you don't beat the tar out of it while you're driving it (which is actually hard to resist), you get some very decent gas mileage. Fun when you want it, economy when you want it - and a Honda? - that's EXACTLY what I have been looking for.
