If there is engine noise, it is not fault of the amp. The JL may be able to hide the noise/hiss, but the cause of the noise/hiss is simply a faulty installation of equipment. Bad grounds, blown picco fuses are most common causes.

I wouldn't be paying $1/watt either. Hell, the new DB Drive Okur series amp I will be running in my demo car is close to 10,000rms @ 18 volts and it is $3,000...which I consider pricey as hell and that is only $0.30/watt. Around 0.49/watt at 14 volts.
