Default Time to Upgrade the Sound

First off, I'm dumb when it comes to car audio, but I decided to do some research before I come to ask this question. I have a 2004 Saab 9-3 and my car uses a MOST fiber optic head unit which makes it damn near impossible to replace. The good thing is by most standards the head unit is good so no need to really replace it. My car is setup for 80/20 sound stage with most of the sound and bass coming from the front and rear speakers used as fill. With that in mind I want to change the front speakers and ass a small 10" sub in the trunk. The main problem is I'm having a hard time finding 2 ohm speakers for my front doors. Can anyone point me in a direction online to find a nice selection so I can get some ideas on what's available. My car has 13 speakers and the audio still sucks. There is no bass and the front speakers are crap, it's a Pioneer OEM system. There are also 3 3.5" speakers in the dash that I'm going to replace, but from reading they are 4 ohm and those have been pretty easy to come by. Also as far as the sub I just want something with nice clean bass, I don't need to rattle the doors off. A little punch is nice, but I lean more towards the clean sound even when listening to rap music. I really would like to keep the price of the 5 front speakers and sub to no more than $400 if possible because I know I'm going to have buy an amplifier and get a box made for the sub as well. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

With that budget you may wanna start looking for used pieces as $400 doesn't travel far especcially when you are speaking of an amp, sub, and enclosure.

Well I know my amp choice will depend on what sub I buy so I put that in a budget by itself along with the enclosure. I checked Crutchfield and getting an Infinity reference system for just front speakers would run me around $180 which would leave another $200+ for the sub. I'm just looking for other sources to expand my search because I talked to a co-worker and he told me Crutchfield is good, but there are other places that sell the same thing for cheaper. The problem I'm having is finding the damn 2 ohm speakers for the front doors. Do you know of any other sites that allow you to narrow down searches or have a wide variety of speakers?

Please, I can have a great system for you below $400 including the sub/subs, amp, enclosure, and amp wiring kit. Give us a call to talk about what you are looking for. For $550, I can do a 4000rms system that will kill the block.

Normally, I would go into posting different options and back anf forth, but it would be easier for you to just call us. 678-740-9077

At my prices, oh yeah, it can be a great one. Just an example, the other day a guy was quoted a price for Polk Audio equipment from a car audio shop down the street from me. He ended up buying the equipment from me for 45% less than what the shop was charging. Another customer that came in last week looking for a Viper alarm system and had got a quote from a car audio shop in Marietta, he ended up buying it from me for 60% less than what they were charging. This included the installation.

I will call you tomorrow. I have to find some time to make it up your way. My schedule is pretty tight right now due to a lot of people being on vacation at work. I was planning on just buying the stuff and having a co-worker install it at the job.

What amp do you have will produce 4000 (+/-200) watts for $550?

    At what distortion rate?

Also, what is the charge for the necessary electrical sytsem upgrades to properly support 4000 watts?

Assuming you can supply 14 volts to the amp, which is fairly high, to produce 4000 watts, you would need close to 300 amps of current.... Which, also assumes a VERY efficient amplifier.

The amp in question is the Quantum Audio QCA4000D amp by DB Drive. The system would come with 2 of those amps...one per sub. The amp puts out 2000rms @ 1ohm.

As far as the electrical upgrades, I do not provide those. I do sell the batteries, but do not have a good deal on high output alternators. Plus, I do not install, so wiring upgrades/extra batteries would be up to the installer and wouldn't make sense for me to provide because you want to upgrade all that with the installation to ensure it is suitable for the system.

Or you can pay more money and get this bad boy...

    6500rms @ 1ohm

    Then add two of these...

This is the system I am going to build for the next car I decide to do a SPL system in. Or might just do 1 sub on the amp if I get something small like a CRX.

Here is the site for the new Okur series and the "Road to 180" info about DB Drive using it to hit 180db with this amp. The main guy going for it (link below) currently holds 11 world records...not to mention all the other world records that the DB Drive team has under their belt.

I still haven't had a chance to make it to your location. The worst part is I have to get this done pretty soon before the guy who is installing it goes on vacation. By the way, did you check the PM I sent you?

so in other words for 550 i can get you a shitty system, the amp has a sticker on it that says 4000 watts max power, and 98 percent of it is made in china including the raptor wiring, and it will have a one year manufacture warranty at which 6 months out of that year you will be at the shop wondering why your shi.t doesnt work right. Sorry dude i havent been around that long but even if your direct with all the manufactures and your placing 15,000 dollar orders a month you still cant build a quality system with 500 bucks.

Raptor wiring is the cheap version of Tsunami....
Like a lot (all) of the cheap lines, they use a LOT more jacketing, and a lot less wire within the jacketing....this fools the customer into thinking they are getting real 4AWG (or whatever size) wire. It has the same outer diameter as the better wires out there, but not the same amount of actual wire.

I have examples at my shop where a cheap 4AWG wire has the same amount of actual cable as a Stinger 8AWG cable...

No, I know the difference in fake gauge wiring kits. Just never heard of Raptor.

why 2 ohm fronts? and the fiber optic is not an issue... its only an antenna fiber optic line thats it. everything else is just reg awg wire. and any decent audio shop not best buy will have it. also I would stick with 4 ohm the reason is its not to good to start adding different aftermarket speakers to a factory system with different impedances'. will throw off staging very badly. I'd say look into a set of decent components up front and a set of alright coax in the back. look for decent small speakers for the dash look for something with a very smooth tweeter setup because after market speakers will outperform your factory system and bright tweeters aimed at your head = headaces. and how do you plan on hooking up the amp/amps to the factory hu? 400 dollars for severl speakers and a sub isn't much but It can be done. how many speakers in what sizes do you want. Imp aside. and what kind of sized sub do you want.? I'd say a single Re audio se 12 in a ported box tuned to about 32 htz will make it a great sounding ride.

^^^^ why do you need coaxes in the rear why not just do a badass component set up front and run a fuck ton of power to them, that will give enough fill to the rear, right? after all when you go to a concert were is the band? were is the instruments placed?

The same reason the car has the MOST fiber optic system in it but yet you can now splice normal awg wire into it, and the only fiber optic in the car is the antenna wire so now what was originally a plastic or glass wire that is made to transmit pulses of light to be decoded by the next node in line in the network will now actually receive AM/FM reception where have you been?
you must be trying out some of your home theater equipment in your car to see just what can be achieved by it that the rest of us dont know yet, so please enlighten us with your findings.

In a concert a majority of the staging is set to the front yes. Generally tho there is many speakers staged around the stage as well not only in front and in back! Yes it would matter if you didn't have a rear stage the sound quality will be destroyed. The staging really creates a tonal balance. and yes I have home audio speakers in my vehicle. Many sound quality vehicles that actually win shows use home audio speakers. Its because they are designed to have less roll off on pitch ranges as well as have higher output with the same power. check out Parts-express.com they sell alot of high end car audio. They also sell home audio speakers that many true car audio enthusiast use to fill their vehicle with true tonal bliss and real sound quality.

I use car audio speakers in my car. I have been to a few car audio competitions in the past.

I have done pretty well at some of them....

In a concert, ALL of the stage is in front of you, unless you have shitty seats. I have never been to a concert where part of the stage was behind me. By "stage", I mean the original origin of the music, NOT reflected sounds, acoustical signature of the venue, or echos. I think you have that term confused.

You say, "The staging really creates a tonal balance". I call bullshit. Staging has NOTHING to do with tonality. Staging has more to do with a sense of "space" within the music with respect to stage depth, height, width, and position within the stage. Tonality has more to do with the sonic characteristics of the various instruments, hopefully, within the sound stage. Some terms commonly used to describe tonality might include: dark, rich, robust, thin, bright, and more. Balance typically refers to the relationship between the various octaves of music. These are usually grouped into sub-bass, mid-bass, mid-range, and highs, even though each one of those general categories may contain several octaves of music. Balance sometimes refers to the left/right relationship of music within the stage.

I dont have rear fill speakers in my car, and my stage is not "destroyed". As a matter of fact, ALL the speakers that play for sound quality are in FRONT of the listening position. The last time I used rear fill speakers in a sound quality car was before the 1995 IASCA World Finals in Greenville, SC....in which I was competing in.

lovinmydodge: There is a little car audio event going on next weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Can we expect you to be entering? MECA, IASCA, USACi, and CAN will all be there.

I would love for you to post pictures of your set-up. Please show me to true tonal bliss and real sound quality. Additionally, I would love the opportunity to listen to your vehicle.
