can anyone give me their 2 cents on which subs to buy later on? im thinking about getting 2 12's, or just 1. but dont know which brand. JL is pretty good, but too expensive. lmk what brand to get or your opinions.

depends on what you listen to, how much space you'e willing to give up. how much power you got, and the variables go on

I personally have a 13W6v2 in a ported box in the STi, and a 13WT5 in my truck, as long as you have the power they require, they beat the fuck down and sound great doing it.

Unfortunetly, this thread will not help you choose unless you have already decided on a couple of them and we weigh in on them. There are too many brands out there and too many good and bad opinions out there. Most people go to brands they know and feel good about their purchase. For example, JL Audio...they make great subs without a doubt, but not worth the money when I can show you a sub that hits harder and sounds just as good for half the price. The same with Viper Alarms. I sell them and do a pretty good amount, but they are much more expensive. However, they are nothing special and use much cheaper parts than they used to. That is Directed for you.

If you want that bass that gets peoples attention, get some decent name brand subs, (at least 150 watt RMS, don't compare using peak numbers), and a big ported box. You can pick up boxes at pawnshops a lot (If you don't know where to get them PM me), and it will absolutely bang as long as you have the proper amount of power to them.
I had two kenwoods that I bought over at the outlet by Jimmy Carter Blvd, two for one deal. The subs were rated for about 200 RMS IIRC, and I powered them 170 RMS to each. In a sealed box, they sounded awesome, very punctual and tight.
I put them in a ported box, and made a world of difference. I think I had at least 3 cubic feet of area for my ported box. It wasn't tight anymore, kind of sloppy in fact, but it absolutely pounded.
Basically, that was my long winded way of saying it all depends on your box. Sealed box will give you that tight bass, and a big ported box will give you that deep pounding bass most people want.
You could not possibly be more wrong. A properly designed and built ported box sounds just as good as a sealed box will.
I'm sure a very nicely built ported box built to the specs of that subwoofer would be pretty tight, sure. But if you're just going to go out there and buy a prefabbed box, the sealed is going to be tighter, and the bandpass/ported will be louder and hit the lower notes harder.

I like Arc Audio and Memphis Audio. There are several great brands though. You just need to make sure to match the subs, enclosure, and power....

Why buy a prefab when a properly built one can be purchased, or built, cheaper?

A properly built one that is built to the specs of the sub will not be cheaper. I should know, I'm using one in my L right now, and it sounds 10 times better than when I made my own sealed boxes.
Sure, with a properly built box (whether you made it or bought it), the subs will sound great. However, if he's looking for some big, deep bass, he should go ported. If he's looking for punchy, and higher range of bass, he should go sealed.
So to sum it up...
Sealed Enclosures: Delivers tight punchy bass and is designed for SQ. However, if you want to get loud bass out of it, then power is your friend.
Ported/Vented: Delivers 1 1/2 - 2 times the amount of bass over Sealed. The bass can be sloppy or tight based on the enclosure being built specific for the sub. These are your best bang for your buck if you want a lot of bass.
I am not sure who would be a box for so cheap. I sell prefab Vented Enclosures starting at $40-50. They are both universal or driver specific...JL, Kicker, Diamond Audio, etc.
To the OP, we will all just throw names out at you. Most people go with what they have experience with even if it is actually not a good choice. I suggest to go listen to some and search the web.

To the OP, Kicker makes pretty decent prefabbed ported and sealed boxes that include the subs. If you go to any audio store, they should be able to let you listen to whatever set ups they have. Just keep in mind that moving all the air inside an open room is much different than in your car, and may not have the right amount of power going to the sub that your listening to.
On top of that, even if you do get a place to make you an enclosure...really check around to hear reviews. I have known tons of places that have made worst enclosures than a prefab one.
For example, the WaveBox that was around years ago. Worst thing ever made.

I have made them before, but I am an amatuer at it.
What I charge depends on the size and complexity of the box. Say you want a box like the one I built for my MTX 4512's, I would charge about $125. That box is a little more complex because I did a trim ring around the subs and port and the port is in the center of the box and not on the side. It also steps down to match my notch cover.
For a square box of the same size, I would charge about $60.

My personal preference is going with lesser known brands that build a higher quality woofer/speaker. My convertible features brand name amps but the sub is built by Alumapro and my speakers are Rainbow Audio.
I enjoy and prefer the boutique brands when it comes to that. Nice tech goes into them, extended warranties and able to get real employees on the phone when you call and talk to them

Yeah, $60 for a normal box being custom built is a extremely good price.

Whoever is making those boxes is a whole hell of alot better at covering boxes than I am. I have to get my brother in law to cover mine even though I know he doesnt want to do it.
They are made by Atrend. I have also sold Pro Box and Audio Enhancers and the Atrend are the best by far. Yeah, the carpeting on them are perfect. If there is a flaw, they will swop it out.
Carpeting is hard as hell to do perfect. I have only seen a couple of people make them that had good carpeting skills.
