For a low budget build you could get something like the MTX 4500's for you could do a single sub with an Alpin type R.

I'm using the 4500's now and they actually get decently loud in a ported enclosure.

And yes, Sony sux sweaty nuts.

I got the subs for $80 for the pair. Definately worth the money. If you can believe Hifonics amps ratings they are getting 300wrms (rated at 225) a peice and handling it like a champ.

Look for a good deal on some Alpine Type-R's. Got mine off ebay for 80 a piece brand new, and at that price I don't see a better option unless you buy used. I have two tens, sound really clean. Whatever you do stay away from Xplods. One of the worst subs on the market, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. And btw if you get any Alpine sub, do not under power them. They're power hungry but they can take the abuse.

Memphis PR is a good "budget" sub. I like the Roclford P2s also, but they are more expensive, and was impressed when we put 2 Alpine Type Rs in the sound board at work recently.... Again, however, a bit more money.

I'm using 4512's because I had them laying around. I bought them cheap a while back then never used them. Then the amps were cheap so it was a done deal.

Right now I am saving up for something a bit larger. Myabe next summer or winter we can start that build.
