Let me share my experience w/ BUDGET rental cars. Last yr in Cali we used buget. I specifically said I did not want their insurance. We filled out the paperwork, and got into the car. Before I pulled off the lot the Check engine light came on. So instead of it breaking down or being blamed for damaging the car I went back in and demanded another car. No problem they printed out the paperwork on the car, and I initialed everything again, and signed at the bottom. When we returned the car it was $250 more than it was supposed to be. The agent was supposed to copy over the original selections from the first car to the 2nd cars paperwork. They made the mistake of selecting that I wanted insurance (or was it on purpose?). Unfortunately I was in a rush, and didn't look over the paperwork carefully the 2nd time, and initialed it. Not that it would of been obvious. Everything you initial is coded (ex: VSSC, IFVS, etc). I'm willing to bet the pull this trick a lot. Ask you, select the opposite, and hope you initial it anyway.
The worst part is the car sat in a parking lot for 5 days while we were on a cruise. Without insurance it was cheaper to rent the car for the entire time vs renting it for 2 days, turning it in, and renting again for 1 more day when we returned. They refused to take off the extra insurance charges at the location, so I called their 800 number when I got home, and they also refused. Sure they made an extra $250 off me, but they just lost thousands in future rentals from me or anyone in my family. Anyway avoid BUDGET RENTAL CARS. They may be cheaper from the looks, but you get what you pay for. The first car was junk, the 2nd one was wrecked on the passenger side. Had I known I actually had their insurance I would of finished it off by slaming it into a wall.
