I lived in Berlin, Germany for a total of 4 years (2 years, 2 times) The last 2 years were 10th and 11th grade. I left 3 months before the Berlin Wall came down (yeah, Im old), but my parents were still there.
German was a LOT easier when I was surrounded by it....lost a LOT over the years. A roommate in college and I ONLY spoke german with each other to keep up. Not so much anymore.
