Western union and such

Has anyone use this service before?
I'm trying to do a wire transfer to Europe but BOA gonna charge me 45 bucks transaction fees, and I found out that western union only charge me 27 bucks. How does it work...Do they send it straight to the receiver's bank account or do they send check through the mail?

OK so how do they contact the receiver that they have received the money?:confused:

you send it to a destination city.

I guess the city has a central database that serves as a medium for all wire transactions.
