It's rough world for Public Safety...especially without a Firefighter I and Firefighter II.

Rockdale's payscale is towards the bottom half...about low 30's. But I could be wrong.

You would have been better served getting your EMT first. Most fire Depts require that as a minimum and will send you to GPSTC/fire school. I know Dekalb, ATL, Forsyth and a few others are hiring but you have to be a minimum of EMT to apply if not a paramedic.

That's the best way to be. Good luck to you, getting that EMT is the best way to do it.

The more you get educated, the less money county has to spend to train you therefore you seem more marketable to them.

EMT/Paramedic classes are starting very soon for North Metro classes, but the sooner you apply yourself and try for some Federal Aid the better.

Do you have to get the training prior to applying for a fire medic position in dekalb county? It says n the app u need paramedic cert. at time of employment. Im confused about the 2weeks emergency medical training.. listed here, and the paramedic cert...someone enlighten me!

Most all fire departments want atleast a EMT-I certification while applying for Fireman these days. Im not sure but I dont think it used to be that way, but now it mostly is. Paramedic is a further degree up from EMT, but usually isnt required to become a fireman that I know of. I know some Fireman that are categorized EMT/Paramedic/Fireman and did cross training which gives them 2 paychecks on payday which would be awesome, but obviously requires more training and certificates.

I might be wrong here but, my brother-in-law just finished his EMT and passed the PE test. He is in Cherokee as a volunteer firefighter right now (to get some experience), but he can only work for the county he lives in. If that's the case are you planning on moving to get a job?

No I said a EMT certification most Fire departments require you to have before you work for them. Paramedic is a higher job than EMT, but you can get both which would be better for you while applying. EMT and Paramedics are the guys in the Ambulance which usually stay at Firestations w/ Fireman. Its up to you on what you want to be and how much money you want on your check. Now when you get an EMT certification Firestations and Hospitals will like that you already have it; or you can go EMT/Paramedic/Fireman and be a Superhero lol. Usually recent grads do volunteer work or when they want to be hired as a Fireman and can get experience.

Good place to get your EMT/Paramedic is North Metro Tech. Which usually has 2 classes a week from 6-9:30 pm so you can work a fulltime job and still do the classes. I suggest you finding out when the next classes start and apply there if your close to the Acworth, Marietta, Kennesaw areas.

Fire medic positions require you to already be a Paramedic. It took me i think 1-1.5 years to go through EMT-I (Intermediate). You first start with EMT basic then when you complete that you can go to EMT-I. After that 1-1.5 years you can just complete you National Registry and be certified for EMT-I or go on to paramedic school. North Metro paramedic classes are on a shift schedule, just like if you were on with a fire dept. I'm not sure but i think 99% of the students in class at north metro paramedic class are already hired with a fire dept. or ambulance service. I know for paramedic class they want you to have expierence in the field before you start class. My buddy is a cherokee fire fighter and he is in paramedic class at north metro. If he is at the station say monday, thursday, and sunday he is at school from like 8-1 tues. , wed., and fri. then it changes every week.

My advice to you is to enroll in EMT Classes and apply everywhere possible. You will be up against stiff competition. When i applied at cherokee they were hiring like 10 people and 250 applied and showed up for the PT test. Start working on your cardio. Go to a sporting goods store and buy a 65lb. weight vest and start running stairs. If you have any questions just ask. Good luck.

And you dont have to live in the county to get hired, only if you want to become a volunteer.

    s.

If u have that paramedic cert,u basically stuck on the ambulance.Thts ur job.SO if you like to be a fireman,emt-I will be sufficient. You have better rotation between the ambulance and fire truck(For gwinnett fire).
    Good luck.
